Real Salt Lake Settles for 1-1 Draw with Minnesota

Sandy, Utah (Saturday, September 15, 2018) – Real Salt Lake (13-10-6, 45 points) extended its home unbeaten streak to 14 straight matches, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Minnesota United FC.  With a crowd of 19,785 at Rio Tinto Stadium, MF Damir Kreilach scored in his third straight match while RSL controlled play in the first half.  However a late goal from Minnesota left RSL with the draw, keeping the home unbeaten streak alive, but ending a three-game winning streak.

RSL dominated play in the first half, outshooting a fatigued Minnesota side 9-1.  While just one of those shots was on frame, Kreilach made it count, scoring his 11th goal of the season in the 11th minute.  MF Sunny recovered the ball in the midfield and played it forward for Kreilach, who worked around a defender and cut to the right before firing a shot inside the far post to put Salt Lake up 1-0.  Although RSL threatened to add to its lead, that’s how the score would remain heading into halftime.

In the second half, Minnesota had two early opportunities thwarted as play leveled out.  Then in the 84th minute, Darwin Quintero played a ball through the RSL defense to Miguel Ibarra all alone in the middle of the box.  He turned and chipped it past GK Nick Rimando to equalize at 1-1.  Minutes later, Minnesota had another goal waved off after video review confirmed that Quintero was offside and the match finished in a 1-1 draw.
