SANDY, Utah (Friday, August 24, 2018) – Real Salt Lake (11-10-5, 38 pts., 4th West) concludes its three-game road trip Saturday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park against Rocky Mountain Cup rival Colorado Rapids (6-13-6, 24 pts., 11th West), with a 7:00 p.m. MT kickoff featuring David James and Brian Dunseth on the broadcast call for KMYU, the RSL on KSL app or KSL.com.
RSL continues its road run following last week’s dramatic 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Houston, one which saw MF Albert Rusnák become the first player in MLS history to provide both the equalizer and the game-winner in second-half stoppage time. Rusnák’s brace began with his MLS Goal of the Week in the 93+ minute, taking a Jefferson Savarino pass atop the box and unleashing a lefty screamer that slammed in off the inside of the post. In the game’s 100+ minute, Rusnák stepped to the spot to calmly convert a penalty given after Sebastian Saucedo was brought down in the area, giving RSL the full three points at Houston.
Saturday at Colorado, the 2018 Rocky Mountain Cup series will be decided as part of Major League Soccer’s Heineken Rivalry Week, RSL holding a 5-2 aggregate edge over the Rapids following 3-0 and 2-2 results at home earlier this season. With a victory Saturday, RSL would capture the fan-created hardware for the tenth time in the last 12 seasons over its regional rival.
Despite its road woes to this point (2-9-2 away), RSL remains above the playoff line amongst the top six in the Western Conference due to its play at Rio Tinto Stadium, where Head Coach Mike Petke’s team boasts an active 12-game unbeaten run at home and an overall 2018 mark of 9-1-3 in Sandy (outscoring opponents 25-11) this year, losing only the season opener on March 10 to LAFC, a 1-5 decision. RSL next welcomes the LA Galaxy to the Wasatch Front for Zlatan’s inaugural Utah visit on Sat., Sept. 1 (tickets available atwww.RSL.com/tickets). Minnesota United FC arrives on Sat., Sept. 15.
