REAL MONARCHS SLC HOLD ON FOR 3-2 VICTORY OVER TULSA ROUGHNECKS FC
FW Chandler Hoffman Scores First Half Brace in Victory; MF Justin Portillo Notches His First Monarchs Goal; Monarchs Claim 10th Consecutive Victory at Zions Bank Stadium

HERRIMAN, Utah (Saturday, August 18, 2018) â€“ Real Monarchs SLC (16-6-2, 50 points, 1 West) claimed a 3-2 victory over Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Saturday at Zions Bank Stadium as MF Justin Portillo’s late penalty kick stealing all three points for the Monarchs.

The first half of action was all one-way traffic in the Monarchs favor as FW Chandler Hoffman’s redirected effort in the 13th minute opened the scoring. The Monarchs would continue to press the Tulsa goal, repeatedly testing Roughnecks FC goalkeeper Fabian Cerda. MF Jack Blake nearly found a second goal in as many game’s mid-way through the first half but again Cerda was up to the task and deflected the shot away. Hoffman doubled the Utah side’s lead in the 35th minute when his headed effort at the past post easily found the net.

In the 54th minute of play, Hoffman nearly found the first hat trick in Monarchs history, but his breakaway effort beat the goalkeeper but couldn’t beat the post and the match remained 2-0. Tulsa jumped on the front foot in the second half, cutting the Monarchs lead in half when Jesus Ferreira found the back of the net in the 55th minute. Roughnecks FC would go on to find the equalizer in the 83rd minute when former Monarchs Eti Tavares’ breakaway effort clipped the inside of the far post before finding its way across the line.

Just one minute later, FW Juan Ignacio Mare drew a penalty and Portillo stepped up and calmly converted the spot kick to finalize the score line at Zions Bank Stadium.

UP NEXT:  The Monarchs will remain at Zions Bank Stadium to host LA Galaxy II at 8:00 p.m. MT.

GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN:

SLC: Chandler Hoffman (Sebastian Velasquez), 13th minute: After the ball found its way to the top of the penalty area from a corner kick, Velasquez unleashed a shot from distance that looked destined for goal. Hoffman did well to get in the way of the shot and deflect the ball past the goalkeeper for the game’s opening goal.

SLC: Chandler Hoffman (Josh Heard), 35th minute: A streaking run down the right sideline from Heard gave him enough space to deliver a lofted cross into the back post. Wriggling free from his man, Hoffman found space at the back post to the easy header for his second of the night.

TUL: Jesus Ferreira (Paris Gee), 55th minute: Just after Monarchs forward Chandler Hoffman hit the post at the other end, Ferreira put away a cut-back effort inside the penalty area to cut the Monarchs lead in half.

TUL: Eti Tavares, 83rd minute: Breaking free from the Monarchs back line, Tavares broke inside the penalty area and calmly placed a shot off the far post and into the net.

SLC: Justin Portillo (Penalty), 85th minute: After Juan Mare drew the penalty, Portillo calmly stepped up to the spot and delivered the game-winning goal. Portillo placed his shot in the top-right corner of the net as the goalkeeper went the other way.
