2018 Tournament of Nations Final Recap

After going down early in the first-half, the U.S. Women’s National Team made an epic 4-1 comeback against Brazil to take home their first Tournament of Nations title. Australia also left Toyota Park victorious, beating Japan 2-0 for the second-place medal. URFC was also well-represented, with DF Becky Sauerbrunn (USA), MF Katrina Gorry (Australia), FW Christen Press (USA), and FW Amy Rodriguez(USA) each returning to Salt Lake City with medals.

Third Round Results 
USA (1st) vs. BRAZIL (7th)

Team USA beat power-house Brazil 4-1 at Toyota Park in front of a sell-out crowd of 18,309 fans. Brazil scored the first goal in the game off of a Tierna Davidson own-goal in the 16thminute, but the U.S. continued to push the offense forward until a 33rdminute goal from Rose Lavelle equalized before the end of the half. 


Second half action included three goals from three different members of the U.S. side, including a volley from Julie Ertz, diving slide from Tobin Heath, and set-piece from Alex Morgan. Utah DF Becky Sauerbrunnplayed the full 90 in the championship, acting as a brick wall against the Brazilian offense. FW Christen Pressalso subbed into the second-half to maintain the high-pressure up top.

AUSTRALIA (8th) vs. JAPAN (6th

A 2-0 win against Japan left the Westfield Matildas with a second-place tournament medal to conclude the 2018 Tournament of Nations. Aussie star Alana Kennedy scored the match’s first goal at the start of the second-half, placing a free kick into the back of the net. Sam Kerr also scored in the 81stminute, registering her 26thinternational goal. Utah MF Katrina Gorrygot the start, playing for a majority of the game as an integral role in the center.
