RENO, Nevada (Tuesday, July 3, 2018) – Real Monarchs SLC (12-4-1, 37 points, 1 West) fell at the hands of Reno 1868 FC 3-0 on Tuesday night in front of 5,125 fans at Greater Nevada Field. The loss was just the fourth of the season for the club and the first time it has fallen to second-year side Reno.

Reno saw the majority of possession in the first half while also generating the bulk of the chances. The home side eventually found the breakthrough in the 32nd minute when Luis Felipe tucked the ball away from inside the six-yard box to break the deadlock. For the Monarchs the intensity increased after going down as it looked to level the score before the interval when MF Charlie Adams unleashed a shot from outside the box that ultimately sailed high and wide.

The second half saw an offensive onslaught from Reno as forward Brian Brown notched two goals in the half to bury the Monarchs. Brown could’ve had a hat trick if not for GK Jake Leeker’s league-leading third penalty kick stop of the season to keep the scoreline at 3-0. The Monarchs have now saved or deterred 11 penalties in its last 13 faced since the beginning of the 2017 season.

SCORING SUMMARY:

Richards did well to flick the ball onto Felipe who shifted his body and volley home the game’s opening goal inside the six-yard box.

RNO: Brian Brown (Antoine Hoppenot), 57th minute: A streaking run down the right flank from Hoppenot allowed him to draw out Leeker and slot the ball across to Brown who slid the ball home into the empty net.

RNO: Brian Brown (Paul Marie), 66th minute: Another streaking run down the right side – this time from Paul Marie – found Brown wide open at the back post. Brown unleashed a first-time volley that deflected off Monarchs defender James Moberg and into the back of the net for the match’s third goal.

KEY SAVES AND DEFENSIVE STOPS:

SLC: Jake Leeker, 21st minute: After a scramble in the box, Reno midfielder Antoine Hoppenot found the ball at his feet with a small window to shoot on goal. Hoopenot got his shot off but Leeker did well to react and parry the ball away from danger.

SLC: Jake Leeker, 80th minute: After Reno’s Brian Brown was tripped up inside the area, Brown stepped up to the penalty spot in search of his hat trick on the night. Brown drove the ball to Leeker’s left which he read well, diving to deny the hat trick to solidify his USL-leading third penalty kick of the season.
