HERRIMAN, Utah (Friday, May 4, 2018) – Real Monarchs SLC (5-1-1, 16 points T-1 West) moved level at the top of the Western Conference by claiming a 2-1 victory over Orange County SC courtesy of goals from MF Maikel Chang and FW Juan Ignacio Mare. The win was the first victory for the Monarchs inside its new home at Zions Bank Stadium.

It took only six minutes for the Monarchs to take the lead when Chang’s left footed effort trickled into the net for his first goal for the club and the first goal in Zions Bank Stadium. The Monarchs would move onto to dominate the visitors without being able extend its lead in the first half. Orange County would level the match just before the half through Aodhan Quinn who’s penalty brought the match level at the interval.

The second half brought more pressure from the Monarchs attacking force as chances to create goals became difficult when MF Charlie Adams saw his second yellow and a subsequent red in the 82nd minute. Another standout performance from GK Connor Sparrow – who made nine saves in the match – helped usher the Monarchs to an intense finish.

The Monarchs found its winner when again Chang was involved in the play, sending Mare on a run into the area. Mare held the ball up to generate time and space before firing a laced effort into the far top corner of the Orange County net to send the 1,644 fans in attendance into a frenzy. The Utah club would hold onto the 2-1 advantage through a barrage of OCSC set pieces at the end of the match to earn its fifth victory of the season.
