Real Monarchs Suffer Second Straight Defeat

SANDY, Utah (Saturday, April 23, 2016)Real Monarchs SLC lost its second consecutive match on Saturday against Rio Grande Valley FC.  Jose Escalante had the lone score in the match with his first goal of the season as the Monarchs fell 1-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Rio Grand Valley FC turned up the heat early. With a long ball over the top of the Monarchs defense, Mauro Montas beat DF Darion Copeland to a header, landing the ball in the back of the net, however the goal was negated when the linesman raised his flag for offside.

In the 25th minute, Escalante opened scoring, slotting the ball right into the back of the net after a string of well-played passes for the 1-0 lead.

Minutes later, the Monarchs pressed for an equalizer.
MF Ricardo Velazco took a perfectly-weighted free kick from about 25 yards out and FW Kevaughn Frater rose up to head a shot, but RGVFC keeper Calle Brown came out strong to win the ball and take away the chance to even the score and the Monarchs went into halftime trailing 1-0.
With the second half underway, RGVFC looked to add to the lead and Emilio Garcia got into the box and played the ball to Robert Caner charging toward the six-yard box, but it went errantly clear and the score remained 1-0.
Real Monarchs played on and tried to make some chances of their own with a couple of well-played passes from DF Max Lachowecki towards the six-yard box, but with no one there to get on the end of it. The Monarchs continued to scramble in the second half but couldn’t turn their opportunities into a goal and the final score saw Real suffer its second consecutive 1-0 defeat.
The Monarchs will host Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Tuesday at Rio Tinto Stadium.
