RSL “Game Note” of the Match: Third Three-game Week
As a result of their great run in the CONCACAF Champions League earlier this year, RSL was forced to postpone many of their Major League Soccer regular season games. The story: Real was assigned four three-game weeks during the 2011 season. Three-game weeks are typically considered disastrous in soccer because of the lineup shuffling, however Real Salt Lake coped well last year during a game-heavy end of the season, even managing to make a historical run in Champions League while almost claiming the Supporters Shield title in MLS play.
RSL’s 2011 Three-game, Eight-day Stretches
4/5 @ SAP (1-2 L); 4/9 @ NE (2-0 W); 4/13 v COL (1-0 W) è 2-1-0
6/4 v VAN (2-0 W); 6/8 @ CLB (1-2 L); 6/11 @ PHI (1-1 T) è1-1-1
6/18 v DC (1-1 T); 6/22 @ CHI / 6/25 v TFC
7/30 v CLB / 8/3 @ KC / 8/6 v NY
More Game Notes ...
The Fire are still looking for their second home win of the 2011 MLS regular season, however they have yet to lose in four matches under newly appointed head coach Frank Klopas.
After the contest, the Chicago Fire will honor Real Salt Lake assistant coach C.J. Brown for his 13-year career as a Fire defender, with whom he won six domestic titles.
RSL History v. Fire
The two teams have met 12 times in MLS regular season play, the Fire taking the advantage with a 5-3-4 mark. Real Salt Lake defeated the Chicago Fire in the 2009 Eastern Conference Championship in a penalty shootout following a scoreless draw after 120 minutes, Jason Kreis’ team advancing to win MLS Cup 2009 and bring the state of Utah its first major-league professional championship in nearly 40 years. A year ago, Real Salt Lake won both regular-season meetings between the two teams, with 1-0 victories on each occasion.
