Rocky Mountain Cup Series History

Real Salt Lake may trail the overall series 6-8-6, but it’s the Utahans that have controlled the rivalry as of late, posting a 4-2-4 record across the last 10 meetings dating back to the middle of the 2007 campaign. That marked the first season RSL claimed the Rocky Mountain Cup trophy for its supporters following a 7-4 win in points on the year, and the Utah side has managed to retain possession of the Cup after series ties in each of the last three regular seasons. Real Salt Lake is 4-3-3 at home all-time against the Rapids, which includes a mark of 1-0-2 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Colorado’s last visit to Sandy made for a memorable encounter last Sept. 25, as, just minutes after an apparent equalizer for the home side was waived off, DF Nat Borchers’ header in stoppage time helped RSL salvage a 1-1 draw in front of a boisterous crowd of 18,317. The return leg for the two sides’ regular season finale on Oct. 23 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park proved even more eventful, as FW Álvaro Saborío’s pair of goals in second half stoppage time capped a furious comeback for a 2-2 draw, allowing the Utahans to lift the Rocky Mountain Cup in front of its fans for a fourth straight occasion. The two sides will close out the rivalry during the 2011 season’s penultimate weekend on Friday, Oct. 14 in Commerce City, Colo.
