The lights of America First Field shine brightly once again this Saturday as RSL hosts another Western Conference clash against 2025 expansion side San Diego FC. The evening is poised to be a long and difficult battle. With the Claret-and-Cobalt currently owning a perfect home record of 3-0-0 (W-L-T) in 2026, RSL looks to strike first and continue its strong start while extending its active unbeaten streak to six straight matches.
One major key to earning the full three points at home will be to draw first blood Saturday night, with RSL boasting a 49-10-19 mark (W-L-T) when scoring first in the Mastroeni era. In this edition of Storylines we’ll dive into the key players returning to the pitch, early RSL standouts and the Utah side's short but competitive history with the ascendant San Diego side.
Key Pieces in Strengthening RSL’s Home Fortress
Real Salt Lake continues to reinforce the return of its home America First Field pitch as a vaunted fortress, the squad powered by Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni has created an environment opponents should dread long before arriving on the Wasatch Front. Since June 2025, the Claret-and-Cobalt boasts an impressive 11-3-2 (W-L-T) home record, a run defined by confidence, grit and control.
The squad’s impressive form was on full display in the commanding 3-1 win over storied rival Sporting Kansas City back on April 4, when RSL dictated the tempo and punished the mistakes of its foe, continuing its perfect 3-0-0 record at home thus far in 2026. Playing at elevation with the roaring sound of the sold-out Riot behind it, RSL will look to continue to make life difficult for any opponent stepping onto its home turf.
Heading into this Saturday’s match, RSL could gain a major boost with the expected return of Juan Manuel Sanabria, who has quickly made an impact in his debut MLS season. Already tallying two assists, the midfielder's work along the sideline has been a masterclass, consistently linking passes, moving to space and creating dangerous scoring opportunities for his teammates. After missing the rivalry matchup against SKC due to visa requirements, the return of Sanabria’s creativity and high soccer IQ comes at a crucial time for Real Salt Lake, who will be looking to continue its active unbeaten streak, bringing it to six matches straight.
The Claret-and-Cobalt could also be lifted by the return of veteran defender DeAndre Yedlin, who should be available for the first time after an early-season injury sidelined him in the week one loss at Vancouver. The veteran defender’s absence has been felt, not just in the defensive zone but also in the form of leadership and communication. With experience spanning from MLS to the English Premier League to the U.S. National Team, Yedlin brings a steady voice in the locker room. The quick decision-making and level of grit provided by Yedlin elevates not only the back line, but the entire squad; and with the scoring firepower of San Diego FC, the defender’s presence will be key in maintaining RSL’s edge at home, especially as the group seeks its first 2026 clean sheet.
Real Salt Lake has been firing on multiple cylinders in 2026, from the efficiency of its new tactical formation to returning goalscorers like Victor Olatunji and 19-year-old Zavier Gozo, each building off of the success of last season to notch early goals. Both returning and new players have integrated seamlessly to help lift the Claret-and-Cobalt to its early season form.
RSL’s roster is full of fresh young talent like rookie striker Sergi Solans, who is continuing to impress in his debut season. The Spaniard has been one of RSL’s most dangerous attacking threats on the field this year. Currently sitting as RSL’s top goal-scorer, netting three goals in the last four matches, the former UCLA/Oregon State star has showcased pace, relentless pressure and clinical finishing. Solans’ ability to cut through defenders, find the corner of the net and slip shots just beyond the goalkeeper has made him a standout, but his mental fortitude brings him a step above most his age.
At just 23 years old, it would be easy to get discouraged after a tough first-half performance like the one he had against SKC, where Solans found himself with multiple scoring opportunities off the crossbar, as well as a one v one with the keeper that was snuffed out. Instead of hanging his head in frustration, the striker used it as fuel, finding the previously elusive goal early in the second half. His mentality not only lifts the teammates around him, but fits perfectly with RSL’s “never quit” mentality, fighting until the final whistle.
RSL starlet Diego Luna wasted no time in his first start of 2026 against SKC, scoring just four minutes into the match. His presence in the midfield adds an extra layer of creativity and attacking prowess alongside Solans, Gozo and Olatunji, giving RSL more avenues to break down opposing defenses. With key players returning and others hitting stride, the Claret-and-Cobalt are well-positioned to defend its home turf once again against a strong San Diego side that will surely battle until the end.
Facing San Diego FC Once Again
Looking to the match itself, San Diego FC will enter this weekend's matchup without a key piece of its back line. Central defender Chris McVey will be serving a suspension after picking up a red card against Minnesota United FC in the 2-1 loss last Saturday, April 11. The defender has been a major contributor so far this season, starting in five of six matches and tallying a goal and an assist early on. The red card marks McVey’s second of the MLS season, and third across all competitions in 2026. The Swedish defenders first came against Toluca in the CONCACAF Champions Cup before receiving two yellow cards in the draw against RSL on March 22. His absence leaves a noticeable gap in the heart of San Diego’s defense, one Real Salt Lake will look to exploit.
San Diego has struggled with disciplinary issues throughout the 2026 season so far, the second-year side has accumulated six red cards across all competitions, with three issued to McVey alone. Head Coach Mikey Varas’ squad has received at least one red card in each of its last four MLS matches, prompting growing concern over what many are calling a “disciplinary crisis.” This pattern has repeatedly left San Diego shorthanded, exposing defensive gaps and disrupting tactical consistency. Entering this key Western Conference matchup San Diego is vulnerable, potentially stretched thin, and under increasing pressure to regain composure and discipline.
RSL’s attackers will be expected to press aggressively, using the pace and chemistry proven successful so far this season to challenge a reshuffled defensive unit. Despite the setback, San Diego brings plenty of firepower. Danish midfielder Anders Dreyer continues to be one of the visitors’ most dangerous playmakers, netting three goals and notching four assists in 2026 so far, including a goal in the previous matchup against RSL that briefly put his squad ahead. Alongside him, fellow Danish forward Marcus Ingvarsten has become the club’s leading scorer with four goals and two assists, also finding the net in the same matchup. The duo can be lethal but San Diego’s ongoing disciplinary issues and missing players could bring limits.
The two sides met just a few weeks ago for the first matchup of 2026 as RSL battled on San Diego’s home turf for a hard-fought point. Solans opened up the scoring with a perfectly-placed header off of a cross from Sanabria, delivered with pinpoint accuracy. San Diego responded quickly through Ingvarsten before Dreyer gave the home side a 2-1 lead early in the second half. In true RSL form, the Claret-and-Cobalt refused to back down, battling to create chances before Olatunji netted the equalizer in the 85th minute in his 2026 season debut.
While the history between the two remains limited, there is no doubt it has been competitive. Each team has claimed a victory and with the recent draw, will this weekend's matchup have a winner to overtake the overall record and jump ahead? A win for RSL would not only give it a leg up in the all-time meeting record but would also extend the squad's unbeaten run to six straight matches and help in continuing the early-season momentum.
