All eyes are now focused on Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in suburban Denver, Colorado, this week, as Tuesday’s highly-anticipated Leagues Cup Quarterfinal between Real Salt Lake and Club León has critical ramifications. With kickoff looming, the Claret-and-Cobalt now look to regain its early tournament form that saw it catapult up the standings with dominant back-to-back shutout victories and the best goal differential amongst the 36 tournament participants to continue its strongest showing in the cross-border tournament since its 2023 inception.

In this edition of Storylines, we’ll dive deeper into the congested month of August for RSL, the key pieces of Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni’s squad who are imperative in earning both a Semifinal spot and a valued CONCACAF Champions Cup berth, along with RSL’s short but intense history with Liga MX top seed Club León.

Rested and Ready for Quarterfinal Clash

The Claret-and-Cobalt’s schedule gauntlet continues with Tuesday's matchup, the eighth RSL game in a congested 25-day period. Although the upcoming match is not included in the squad’s MLS regular-season play, it is important to examine the 2-1 loss on Saturday night at Orlando City.

Due to the jam-packed slate of games, Mastroeni made 10 personnel changes to the starting XI from last Wednesday’s 3-4 loss against FC Dallas, the heaviest rotation during the Mastroeni era, matching the number of changes which occurred twice during RSL’s 2023 U.S. Open Cup run. This allowed players who may have seen limited action in 2026 to take the pitch and make a case.

With RSL Homegrown and breakout young star Zavier Gozo recently departing the club to join English Premier League side Crystal Palace, and fellow Utah-native Zach Booth out due to injury, the squad saw Polish MF Dominik Marczuk made a compelling case in Orlando for those vacated minutes. The 22-year-old former Young Player of the Year in his native Poland score RSL’s lone goal for the Claret-and-Cobalt, nearly netting a brace during first-half stoppage time in the difficult road loss. If Marczuk can build on his performance from the weekend, he could emerge as a key piece in RSL’s efforts to replace the production lost on the right side.

With the early-week Leagues Cup knockout match, Mastroeni and his staff opted to rest a few of its high-minute stars, including 2026 RSL Golden Boot leader Sergi Solans. The 23-year-old MLS rookie has been a constant for Real Salt Lake’s attack throughout 2026 and will be an important piece in the Quarterfinal match.

The Spaniard has enjoyed a breakout rookie campaign, showcasing a high-level soccer IQ while consistently finding the back of the net. The Oregon State/UCLA standout has an impressive 13 goals across all competitions (MLS, Friendlies, Leagues Cup), along with nine goals in MLS action, his score Wednesday against Dallas earning him a new rookie Club record - one more than Corey Baird’s 2018 mark - and sole possession of RSL’s all-time record for goals for a first-time professional. With five goals in his six matches during the month of August, including one in each of his last four matches, Solans remains critically important in RSL’s Leagues Cup push, the Utah side two wins from a CONCACAF Champions Cup berth and three wins from a trophy.

Along with Solans, key attacking counterparts include star MF Diego Luna and French Designated Player Morgan Guilavogui. The trio up top have been nothing short of marvelous throughout the 2026 season, and especially during the busy month of August. While both entered Saturday’s match in Orlando as substitutes, the pair put on an impressive performance in front of its home crowd at America First Field just three days earlier. Luna brought creativity to the midfield, bagging two assists and a goal, giving him five goals and six assists in MLS play thus far in 2026, while the French attacker netted his second MLS score to go along with a Club-best seven assists on the season.

With all three attacking figures rested and presumably playing crucial minutes on Tuesday, RSL is poised to put on a show in the coveted Leagues Cup Quarterfinal.

RSL Looks to Recreate 2023 Magic

Before diving into the Tuesday night Quarterfinal matchup, it is important to look back in time to Real Salt Lake’s debut in the cross-border tournament in 2023. The Claret-and-Cobalt entered the newly-expanded tourney with a strong opening performance against fellow MLS side Seattle Sounders. Former RSL attackers Jefferson Savarino and Cristian Arango each scored early in the second half and while RSL received a Marcelo Silva red card in the 61st minute, forcing the squad to play down a man for the final half-hour, Guatemalan international Rubio Rubin provided the late dagger to earn the debutants a convincing 3-0 win.

However, momentum then stalled in RSL’s second match, as the squad fell 3-0 to Liga MX powerhouse CF Monterrey, falling victim to a German Berterame masterclass. Despite the setback, Real Salt Lake advanced to the Round of 32 as the second-place team in its group.

There, Real Salt Lake met Club León for its first and only meeting prior to Tuesday, delivering one of its most memorable wins of the 2023 season, a dramatic 3-1 comeback victory over the reigning CONCACAF Champions Cup winners. The hard-fought, come-from-behind victory was fueled by a brace from former RSL striker Danny Musovski and another Arango goal, an emotional affair that saw kickoff delayed by 24 hours due to extended lightning storms throughout the Wasatch Front, complete with an unhoused raccoon falling through the drenched press box ceiling in Sandy.

Now, as the clubs meet for the second-ever matchup, the previous 2023 showdown brings added fire and determination for both sides. The Liga MX team boasted an impressive 2026 run in Leagues Cup throughout Phase One, winning its matchups against Nashville and Orlando, moving Ritchie top of the Liga MX table with a come-from-behind, 3-2 victory over global icon Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF.

While the Claret-and-Cobalt have struggled in MLS play since its post/World Cup return to action, its performances in the cross-border tournament have been mostly dominant, as it finished out its last two matches of Phase One by scoring seven goals and conceding none. If RSL is to continue in the tournament and earn a spot in the Semifinal, the squad will need to work as a unit against the top-ranked Liga MX side in the tournament, León dominating the competition, highlighting one man in particular who has enjoyed a red-hot 2026 Leagues Cup campaign.

Columbian MF Daniel Arcila has been the key to the León attack throughout Phase One, the 24-year-old attacker scoring four goals across the three matches, including a brace and game-winning score in the victory over Miami. Holding Arcila at bay in Tuesday’s match will be imperative to keeping the momentum in favor of RSL and earning a victory.

The Quarterfinal in suburban Denver will be an exciting matchup filled with firepower and defensive battles. As RSL gears up for the match, it holds added significance, representing the furthest the squad has advanced since its debut in 2023, RSL falling in the Round of 32 at LAFC, a year when the tournament was still played in its former format of 47 teams. After being knocked out early last year,  Mastroeni and Co. now seek to recapture early tournament form and come away with the victory and a spot in the Semifinal.

The highly-anticipated Quarterfinal clash against Liga MX side Club León at the neutral-site Dick’s Sporting Goods Park kicks off this Tuesday, August 25 at 8:30 p.m. MT, streaming on Apple TV. RSL then closes out its three-game road swing Saturday, August 29, heading back to Denver to face off against Rocky Mountain Cup rival Colorado Rapids. Kickoff for that match is slated for 7:30 p.m. MT, also streaming on Apple TV.
