Scotland Suffer Heartbreaking Draw with Argentina

In their final match of the group stage in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Scotland and Utah Royals FC DF Rachel Corsie drew 3-3 with Argentina, sealing their fate in a heartbreaking fashion, missing the next round of the tournament by inches.

Once again Corsie captained the Scottish squad from the centerback position and remained there the entire match.

Scotland took a commanding 3-0 lead over their South American opponent with goals from Kim Little, Jenny Beattie and Erin Cuthbert.

In the 74th minute Argentina found their legs and started their comeback.

With the minutes dwindling down it looked as if Scotland would have secured their first victory in the tournament and prolonged their hopes of moving on. However, a penalty was called, giving Argentina the opportunity to level the score, the third time this tournament Scotland has faced such a call.

The shot from the spot was saved by Scotland goalkeeper Lee Alexander, but the referee went to Video Assistant Referee and in a controversial call determined that the goalkeeper was off her line and thus awarded Argentina a second chance at goal.

Argentina capitalized and the match ended in a 3-3 draw.

With just one point from the group stage matches Scotland will not continue on in the tournament.

As a result, Royals FC will have their choice centerback rejoining the roster in the coming weeks.
