RSL Technical Director wants to see more from his team

Plata and Morales vs Colorado 0607

A 4-5-6 record through the first 15 games has Real Salt Lake Technical Director Craig Waibel a bit frustrated.

“It is a marathon but at some point you’ve got to start sprinting,” Waibel said on The Bill & OC Show on ESPN 700 on Monday.

While Waibel has practiced patience throughout the season in seeing his team mold together despite absences of several key players for long stretches, eventually, he said, the time is right for some urgency.

On Sunday, when RSL played to a scoreless draw with the Colorado Rapids at Rio Tinto Stadium, he would have liked to have seen a more urgent RSL side, particularly after the return of Sebastian Jaime and Joao Plata to the starting lineup to complete the foursome that also includes Javier Morales and Alvaro Saborio.

“We’re finally starting to see the team come together.  It is nice to see Plata out there, Jaime, Javi, Sabo and see them all working together.  For the first 35-40 minutes of the game the other day, it looked really good,” Waibel said.  “The frustration for me was that we produced 15 shots and really seven good scoring chances and that’s a pretty good amount for a game.  But we only got one shot on target.  There’s always something to get picky about and right now is an easy time to be picky.”

Waibel added, “We have to be more courageous in our possession.  We have to move the ball better.  We must control the game much, much more confidently on the ball or we end up in these end-to-end games that we’ve been a part of.”
