RSL Signs Julian Vazquez as 16th Homegrown Player

RSL Academy Product, Logan, Utah Native Becomes 16th Homegrown Signing in Club History

HERRIMAN, Utah (Saturday, October 6, 2018) – Real Salt Lake announced on Saturday that the club has signed RSL Academy product and Nibley, Utah native Julian Vazquez as the club’s 16th Homegrown signing.  He is the first Homegrown signing to have played at the Zions Bank Real Academy in Herriman, Utah, since the state-of-the-art facility’s inception in 2017.


“Real Salt Lake has been a huge part of my life because I’d always go to the games and supporting the team,” Vazquez reflected. “I know RSL utilizes its youth and trusts in its system I know I’m going to have to prove myself and I’m really excited about that. To be a part of the first team now is an honor to me and my family.”

Vazquez, 17, has started and featured in five matches for the RSL Academy U-19s this season, scoring one goal. For the RSL U-17s last season, Vazquez played in 29 matches, making 25 starts and scoring 13 goals. Through his club career in Utah, Vazquez featured for local powerhouse La Roca Futbol Club and played for Ridgeline High School in Millville, Utah.


“We’re excited to add another Academy player in Julian,” Real Salt Lake Head Coach Mike Petke said. “It’s important to utilize our academy and Julian has earned the right to be signed. Now it’s up to him of what he makes of it.”


He will bring RSL’s current list of Homegrown signings on the roster to nine, along with DF Danilo Acosta, FW Jordan Allen, FW Corey Baird, DF Justen Glad, DF Aaron Herrera, MF Jose Hernandez, DF Brooks Lennon and MF Sebastian Saucedo.  Other former Homegrown signings include Nico Muniz, Donny Toia, Lalo Fernandez, Benji Lopez, Phanuel Kavita, Fito Ovalle and Ricardo Velazco.


“It’s always a proud day at RSL when we are able to sign a young player that has come through our system,” RSL General Manager Craig Waibel said.  “We have made a commitment to youth development and Julian has done a lot to earn this opportunity.”


Vazquez will join Real Salt Lake’s roster in the 2019 season.
