RSL Academy Prepares For GA Cup Knockout Thursday

HERRIMAN, Utah / Bradenton, Fla. (Wednesday, April 3, 2024) – Real Salt Lake Academy is one of just five to see its teams advance to the Round of 16 in both the U15 and U17 age groups at this year’s Generation Adidas Cup, and one of only two MLS academies to have both age groups go undefeated, with each of the RSL sides ending their group stages unbeaten

On Thursday, the RSL Academy U15s square off against New York Red Bull at 12 noon ET, while the U17s face Chicago Fire at 5:00 p.m. ET with GA Cup Quarterfinal berths on the line.

In Monday’s group finales, the RSL U15s seized control of the group with a 1-0 win over Weston FC, as Anthony Capetillo came off the bench and scored the game-winning goal with two minutes remaining. Capetillo won a header and flicked the ball past the defense to himself, finding his way into a one-on-one with the opposing ‘keeper, calmly poking the ball into the back of the net.

On the U17 side, it was another player coming off the bench to make the difference, as Omar Marquez was added by Head Coach Jordan Allen, the recent Real Monarchs signing immediately making an impact with his tenacity and relentlessness on the attack. Streaking down the left-hand side, Marquez beat two defenders and crossed to Zavier Gozo just inside the top of the box. Gozo – an MLS signing who made his Division I professional debut late last year – beat his defender to the ball and unleashed a left-footed volley on a first-time touch into the top corner for another late game-winner, allowing the 17s to remain unbeaten and win the group.

RSL Academy U17 goalkeeper Will MacKay posted two clean sheets in the three group games, also coming up big during the shootout tiebreaker with Colombian side Atletico Nacional.
