Real Monarchs Take on Switchbacks FC

HERRIMAN, Utah (Tuesday, September 8, 2020) – Real Monarchs host Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Wednesday, September 9. Kickoff at Zions Bank Stadium is set for 8:00p MT and can be watched LIVE on ESPN+ and locally on the KSL TV app.


The Monarchs last played their regional rivals on August 1 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The match ended in exciting fashion with Monarchs defender Taylor Peay scoring a header in the third minute of stoppage time with an assist from James Moberg to steal the full three points. Several days before that the two sides faced one another in the first professional sporting event to have fans since COVID-19, the match ended in a 3-3 draw with goals Andrew Brody, Kyle Coffee and Peay.

The two clubs are completely even through sixteen regular-season head-to-head matches all-time with a 7-7-1 record and a zero goal difference. The Monarchs will look to tip the scales their way on Wednesday night with a second-consecutive win on the season and a second-consecutive win over Switchbacks FC.

Head Coach Jamison Olave enters his first full season at the helm of the club as the permanent head coach after two successful stints as the interim head coach of the group. Olave – together with returning Assistant Coach Matt Glaeser – will look to replicate last season’s success during the club’s sixth season in the Championship.
For 2020, the Monarchs return a familiar core of players from the 2019 season as defenders James Moberg and Noah Powder lead the backline of one of the league’s most elite teams. Midfielders Jack Blake and World Cup veteran Ricardo Avila return carrying with them a slew of experience into 2020.
New faces in the squad include players with ample USL League One experience including the 2019 League One MVP Arturo Rodriguez and standouts Joe Gallardo and Chris Bermudez. RSL Academy products Jordan Pena, Damian German and Steve Jasso also exemplify the growth pipeline between the Academy and the professional ranks for the 2020 season, each returning for their second season in a Monarchs jersey. The Monarchs also welcome rookie goalkeeper Jimmy Slayton to the roster for 2020.
