Real Monarchs SLC Earns 2-1 Comeback Victory Over Reno 1868 FC

RENO, Nev. (Saturday, September 28, 2019) – Real Monarchs SLC (13-10-7, 46 points) mounted a 2-1 comeback victory over Reno 1868 FC on Saturday at Greater Nevada Field.

DF Noah Powder found the equalizer with his second goal of the season while RSL man DF Erik Holt became the 20th player to score in a Monarchs jersey in 2019 with his late heroics.

The first half saw 1868 FC take control early, finding the back of the net twice within the first 20 minutes, but both goals were disallowed due to a foul and offsides. The Monarchs found its footing in the 20th minute as FW Kyle Coffee sent a shot just wide of the frame and Powder’s headed effort that was picked up by Reno goalkeeper James Marcinkowski. It would be Reno that struck first however from a headed chance from Daniel Musovski. Before the first half ended, Powder cut through a crowded penalty area to tap in a goal for the equalizer in the 41st minute.

The rain began to fall at the start of the second half and both sides slowed down the pace of the game. Reno found the better opportunities as two shots rebounded off each side of the frame and a shot from Gilbert Fuentes tested GK David Ochoa with a massive save. The Monarchs began to rally its comeback as MF Maikel Chang fired a shot that bounced off the far post. FW Luis Arriaga went to clean up the goal, but was stopped twice in spectacular fashion by Marcinkowski. Real Monarchs found the late go-ahead goal from the resulting corner opportunity with Holt’s first goal for the Monarchs this season as he found the far side of the goal with a low shot to secure the 2-1 win in the 83rd minute.

UP NEXT: Real Monarchs SLC returns home to continue its playoff push as it hosts 2019 Expansion Side Austin Bold FC. The match is scheduled for Saturday, October 5 with a kickoff time of 1:00 p.m. MT from Zions Bank Stadium.

GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN
RNO: Daniel Musovski (Seth Casiple), 29th minute: Reno 1868 FC earned a freekick just right of the penalty area. The ball was served over to the far post where Casiple caught it to cross it back into the middle of the box. Musovski met the ball with his head and flicked the shot into the near post for the opening goal.

SLC: Noah Powder (Maikel Chang), 41st minute: After picking up the pass from Chang, Noah Powder wasted no time to dribble the ball through traffic in a crowded box. Once he was through the Reno defense, Powder took a simple tap to push the ball into the netting at the far post for an equalizer before the break.

SLC: Erik Holt, 83rd minute: FW Luis Arriaga tested 1868 FC goalkeeper James Marcinkowski into two saves as he attempted to clean up a rebounded shot off the post. The resulting corner bounced through the middle of the box and to the far post where Holt struck to find the far netting and secure the 2-1 Monarchs win on the road.

KEY SAVES AND DEFENSIVE STOPS
SLC: David Ochoa, 65th minute: As 1868 FC mounted an attack at the top of the penalty area, the ball was able to get to the feet of Gilbert Fuentes. Fuentes took a quick shot with the inside of his foot that Ochoa expertly got in front of to deflect back out for the Monarchs defense to clear.
