REAL MONARCHS SLC DROP 1-6 RESULT AT LA GALAXY II
Despite Loss, Monarchs Clinch 2018 USL Cup Playoff Berth; FW Chandler Hoffman Nets Team-Leading 12th Goal of 2018; Monarchs Return Home to Face Switchbacks FC on Sept. 29

Carson, Calif (Saturday, September 22, 2018)Real Monarchs SLC (17-11-3, 54 points, 4 West) suffered its worst loss in club history on Saturday night, falling 1-6 to LA Galaxy II at StubHub Center. FW Chandler Hoffman notched the lone goal for the Monarchs in the loss, his team-leading 12th of the year.


The Monarchs nearly found the opening goal in the 3rd minute when MF Charlie Adams slammed a curling shot off the crossbar before the ball was cleared away from danger. It would be the hosts that struck first when Ethan Zubak’s curling effort in the 18th minute beat GK Jake Leeker for the game’s first goal. Los Dos doubled its advantage in the 39th minute when Adrian Vera found separated himself inside the penalty area and headed home a Diedie Traore cross. Depsite holding the majority of possession in the first half, the Monarchs entered the break down by two goals.


The second half opened much like the first ended as Los Dos found a third goal when Efrain Alvarez found the ball at his feet after a miscommunication in the box from the Monarchs. Alvarez tapped home into an empty net in the 49th minute before curling a sublime effort into the far side netting in the 53rd minute. The Monarchs finally broke through in the 57th minute when Hoffman tapped home for his 12th goal of the 2018 season. Galaxy II added a fifth goal after a giveaway at midfield from MF Justin Portillo gave the ball away to Alvarez who broke away to goal before calmly chipping Leeker to complete his hat trick.


As the Monarchs pressed in an effort to get back into the game, Los Dos found the sixth goal when Frank Lopez broke away and tucked home. The match finished 1-6 in


UP NEXT: The Monarchs will return home to face Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Saturday, September 29 at 7:00 p.m. from Zions Bank Stadium.


GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN:

LA: Ethan Zubak (Diedie Traore), 18th minute: A driven ball near the touchline found the run of Zubak 1v1 with a Monarchs defender. Zubak did well to cut back and fire a curling effort into the far post from just outside the penalty area for the go-ahead goal.


LA: Adrian Vera (Diedie Traore), 39th minute: Another driven cross into the center of the box just outside the six-yard box from Traore found the head of Vera. Vera did well to skip away from his defender a redirect his header into the back of the net.


LA: Efrain Alvarez, 49th minute: Just four minutes into the second half, Alvarez saw the ball drop to his feet with an open net inside the penalty area where he easily tapped the ball home.


LA: Efrain Alvarez (Geoffrey Acheampong), 53rd minute: A ball played out wide by Acheampong found the feet of Alvarez near the corner of the penalty area. Alvarez cut in on his left foot and curled a shot to the back post last coolly found the back of the net.


SLC: Chandler Hoffman (Ricky Lopez-Espin), 57th minute: Lopez-Espin found himself streaking down the left side of the field where he was able to cut in and pick his head up to find Hoffman inside the area. After Sebastian Velasquez let the ball run through to Hoffman at the back post, Hoffman calmly tucked the ball home for his 12th goal of the year.


LA: Efrain Alvarez, 75th minute: Giving the ball away near midfield, the Monarchs immediately chased Alvarez into the box where he chipped on onrushing Jake Leeker to complete his hat trick.


LA: Frank Lopez (Tomas Hillard-Arce), 86th minute: A through ball into the path of Lopez let him break free on goal where he easily found the inside of the back post for the game’s sixth goal.


NOTES:

- With San Antonio dropping points against Saint Louis earlier in the evening, the Monarchs clinched a place in the 2018 USL Cup Playoffs before the match against LA kicked off. The Monarchs have now entered the playoffs in two consecutive seasons.


- MF Sebastian Velasquez returned to the field for the first time since August 18.


- The Monarchs have now lost five of its last six matches, taking just one point from six matches.


- The 1-6 loss at LA Galaxy II is the worst loss in club history.
