James Moberg Announces Retirement

HERRIMAN, UTAH (Monday, October 25, 2021) – Real Monarchs defender and captain James Moberg has announced his retirement from professional soccer after six years with the Club.

“When I lay my head down at night and look over at my wife and daughter, I can say to myself I gave everything to this game and I left everything I had on the field. I wouldn’t be at this point in my career if it wasn’t for my family. I can’t thank them enough. I’ll forever be indebted to them,” Moberg said. “This game has been everything to me, the lessons I’ve learned on and off the field have shaped me into who I am today. As this chapter closes, I look forward to conquering new challenges and striving to be the best at anything I do."

Moberg played six professional seasons with Real Monarchs in the USL Championship, first joining the Club in 2016. Across his tenure with the Monarchs, Moberg accumulated nearly every trophy possible in the USL Championship, including 2017 USL Regular Season Shield, the 2019 Western Conference Title and the Club’s first-ever USL Championship title in 2019.

The defender became one of just two players in Real Monarchs history to record 100 appearances, joining current Real Salt Lake defender Andrew Brody. As the longest Real Monarchs tenured player, Moberg appeared in 101 matches, recording three goals and four assists.

“For many years now James Moberg has been pivotal player, a cornerstone, of the Real Monarchs organization, without whom many of the team’s success would not be possible,” RSL Assistant General Manager Tony Beltran said. “These past two years Moberg has displayed the highest level of professionalism as he has stepped into a leadership role. He has become someone that our younger players can look up to and learn from, and he will be deeply missed. We are incredibly grateful for Moberg’s commitment to this Club and the greater community and look forward to partnering with him in whatever comes next.”

Prior his professional playing career, Moberg attended the University of Washington where he tallied 10 goals and 21 assists in 69 appearances for the Huskies from 2012-2015.

The Club will recognize and honor Moberg’s contributions to the Club prior to the Real Monarchs game against Rio Grande Valley on October 27 at 7:00 p.m. MT. Tickets to the match are available at RealMonarchs.com.
