Preview: Real Salt Lake vs. Minnesota United FC

SANDY, Utah (Friday, June 16, 2017)Real Salt Lake resumes its 2017 Major League Soccer campaign Saturday night at Rio Tinto Stadium against expansion side Minnesota United FC. Kickoff is at 8:00 p.m. MT, with a special pre-game ceremony welcoming the club’s U.S.A. U-20 quartet – DF Danilo Acosta, DF Justen Glad, FW Brooks Lennon and FW Sebastian Saucedo – back home following their stellar recent form at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Korea.


Real Salt Lake (4-10-2, 14 points, 11th West) faces a quick turnaround after Wednesday’s Open Cup loss at Sacramento, returning home to Rio Tinto Stadium, where the club has won back-to-back games. For the first time in the Mike Petke era, RSL is expected to have nearly its entire roster available for selection, with the lone exception being MF Albert Rusnák, currently competing for Slovakia in the UEFA European U-21 group stage.


This week welcomes the return of several RSL players from international duty, as GK Nick Rimando (USA), FW Jefferson Savarino (Venezuela) and the club’s U.S. Under-20 quartet are back on the Wasatch Front. Returning from injury and back in the mix to compete for minutes are FW Jordan Allen, DF Demar Phillips and DF David Horst, with only FW Chad Barrett remaining out for an extended period.

Real Salt Lake is now 4-7-0 since April 8 in its new era under Head Coach Mike Petke, a total which includes back-to-back home wins in recent weeks over NYCFC (2-1) and Philadelphia Union (1-0). Two of the club’s next three games are at home beginning with Saturday’s 8:00 p.m. MT kickoff against Minnesota as well as the Friday, June 30 Independence Day Weekend contest against Orlando (7:30 p.m. MT kick). Those Rio Tinto Stadium contests surround a June 24 visit to San Jose.
