Preview: Monarchs at Vancouver

SANDY, Utah (Friday, May 26, 2017) – Real Monarchs SLC (8-1-0, 24 points, 2ndWest) continue their 2017 USL season this weekend with a Sunday afternoon contest in Vancouver against the Whitecaps 2. The 4:00 p.m. MT kickoff gives Head Coach Mark Briggs’ team a chance to complete the early-season road treble against Pacific Northwest foes, as the club has posted a 2-1 win at Portland and a 3-1 victory at Seattle already this year.

The Monarchs are also seeking to extend the club’s active win streak to a club-record six games, as last week’s 5-2 home win over the Colorado Springs Switchbacks kept the third-year side perfect at home with a 5-0-0 mark, while avenging the lone loss of the season (a 1-2 loss at Colo. Springs).

Led by FW Chandler Hoffman and MF Sebastian Velasquez – each with six goals in the first nine games this season – the Monarchs have scored multiple goals in each of its eight victories to make the club the second-highest scoring team in the USL, with 25 goals through nine matches. The club boasts six players with multiple goals, including 11 total goalscorers so far this season. On the other side, the defense led by GK Connor Sparrow and three defenders that have played every one of 810 total minutes this season (DF James Moberg, DF Max Lachowecki as well as Captain Nick Besler) have allowed just two goals in the last 314 minutes played.

Last Saturday, the Monarchs earned their fifth consecutive victory with a 5-2 win against Colorado Springs at Rio Tinto Stadium.  FW Daniel Haber scored one goal and assisted on two others, including one each for the Hoffman / Velasquez braces to keep the Utah side to within two points of overall USL leader San Antonio (8-0-2, 26 points, 1st West).

On Saturday, June 3, the Monarchs travel to Orange County for a 6:00 p.m. MT kickoff, prior to returning home to Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday, June 10, to host Portland Timbers 2 at 7:00 p.m. MT.

The Rio Tinto Stadium box office is open Mon.-Fri., 10a-6p; more information can be found online at Current or interested RSL Royalty Season Ticket Members can purchase extra tickets at preferred pricing or gain assistance via the Fan Relations Hotline at 801-727-2702.

Coming in late Summer, 2017, the Zions Bank Real Academy opens in Herriman, Utah, approximately 20 minutes southwest of Rio Tinto Stadium. The $60 million facility will serve as the daily training home beginning in 2018 for both of the club's professional teams – RSL (MLS) and Real Monarchs (USL) – while centralizing the club's U-18, U-16 and future U-14 development academy youth selections. Including the 5,000-seat Zions Bank Stadium as well as the Zions Bank Training Center, the Herriman campus will provide adjacencies for an on-site charter school opening this Fall, with STEM disciplines (Science/Technology/Engineering/Math) for nearly 300 boys and girls. In mid-November in North Logan, Utah, RSL Owner Dell Loy Hansen broke ground on the first of a half-dozen regional training centers across Utah and Arizona to be built in the next 2-3 years.  Each $5 million RTC houses a classroom, as well as an indoor and outdoor field, dedicated to fulfilling a curriculum consistent with the club's vision and mission for youth soccer training and education, and the continued development of both recreational and competitive pre-Academy (ages 7-12) initiatives across Utah and Arizona.
