The Claret-and-Cobalt were unable to complete the comeback in Charlotte, falling short in a hard-fought battle that ended in a frustrating result on the road. Despite the loss, the match wasn’t without its bright spots, as RSL showed flashes of attacking promise and resilience throughout a hard-fought 90 minutes plagued by yet another match of controversial calls and VAR decision. With new faces making an impact and the team creating several quality chances, there are still reasons for optimism as the Claret-and-Cobalt continue to build momentum heading into the final eight regular-season contests.

Real Salt Lake welcomed two new striking forces into the starting lineup against Charlotte, as newly-acquired Designated Player Rwan Cruz and Nigerian striker Victor Olatunji seeking to ignite a much-needed spark in front of goal. After struggling to find consistency in the final third, the Claret-and-Cobalt have used the ongoing secondary transfer window to bolster its offense, banking on this attacking injection to bring the firepower.

A Debut to Build On: Cruz Steps Up in First MLS Start for Real Salt Lake

Cruz, one of the newest additions to RSL, brought opportunity and excitement to the front line of RSL. Cruz joined the club on August 1 via loan from Brazilian power Botafogo with the hopes of injecting much-needed firepower into the Claret-and-Cobalt attack. The Brazilian striker arrived in Utah after an electric start to his 2024-25 season, where he tallied 22 goals across all competitions, including a strong showing in Bulgaria with Ludogorets and a key stint with FIFA Club World Cup side Botafogo. Signed as RSL’s 16th all-time Designated Player, Cruz brings not only a proven scoring pedigree but also an attacking presence that has RSL fans buzzing with anticipation. His versatility and knack for finding the net make him a potential game-changer for a team that has struggled to finish chances throughout 2025.

In his first MLS start with the Claret-and-Cobalt, Cruz wasted no time making his presence felt. Even though he didn't find the back of the net, he was instrumental in the first half, generating offensive movement and creating clear opportunities for the team to capitalize on. His energy, positioning, and ability to stretch the backline added a new dynamic to RSL’s attack that had been missing.

Before his exit in the second half, Cruz made a significant impact on both ends of the field, creating offensive opportunities while also contributing with key defensive stops that disrupted the Carolina attack. His most promising chance came in the 60th minute, but it was ultimately denied by the home side’s back line. While he wasn’t able to secure a goal to complete the comeback for RSL, the influence Cruz had in such a short time with the team is a promising sign. As he continues to build chemistry and adjust to his new surroundings, his role is expected to grow even stronger throughout the rest of the season.

Thrown into Action: Olatunji Brings Energy in Debut MLS Start

The addition of striker Victor Olatunji this summer has only amplified the excitement surrounding Real Salt Lake’s front line. After receiving his green card on Thursday, just two days before RSL’s match tonight, Olatunji was officially eligible and made the most of the moment by earning a start in his MLS debut.

The Nigerian forward, whose arrival had already generated buzz, brought energy and physicality up top, instantly adding a new dimension to the attack. His quick integration into the lineup reflects the club’s confidence in Olatunji and the immediate impact he can make in the final third. His presence was felt throughout the second half, highlighted by one of the Claret-and-Cobalt’s most promising chances - a well-placed cross to fellow RSL debutant Cruz, who came just inches away from finding the back of the net. With both his Club debut and first start coming on the same night, there’s plenty to be excited about as Olatunji begins to settle in with this RSL squad.

Cruz’ first MLS start and Olatunji’s debut hint at the impact this fresh attacking duo could have as the Club looks to break through recent scoring struggles and bring consistent pressure from the opening whistle. With playoff implications looming and every point becoming more crucial, RSL’s decision to bring in both players signals a clear intent to reset the tone up front. As both strikers continue to compete with the team in Utah, staff and fans alike will be excited to see how these shooting powerhouses can help lift Real Salt Lake as the season inches closer and closer to the playoffs.

The Claret-and-Cobalt return home to America First Field this Saturday, August 23, to host Minnesota United in a rematch of last year’s intense first-round postseason series, setting the stage for a critical and exciting matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MT, and tickets are available for purchase here.
