Saturday afternoon in Sandy saw RSL snap its two-game losing streak, with Utah’s stars putting on a show for the home Sandy crowd, notching its first shutout of the 2026 campaign.
Moon Man
With an sun-soaked afternoon crowd of 20,614 honoring RSL’s “Moon Man” Diego Luna pregame for reaching 100 MLS career matches played for Real Salt Lake, the USMNT World Cup hopeful reaching the century mark last week against LA Galaxy, Luna came out hot, impacting the match from the opening whistle. Active in the midfield, the RSL playmaker distributed a flurry of through-balls to open up space all over the pitch for his teammates, notching an 88 percent pass rate through his 89’ shift, one which included a fast-break through-ball to Morgan Guilavogi’s 1v1 opportunity in the 45th minute.
In the 28th minute, Luna found the back of the net for the third time this season, scoring his 25th MLS goal with the Claret-and-Cobalt. The goal moved Luna into the 10th-most goals scored all-time in RSL’s 693-game history, tied with Anderson Julio.
Nearing the conclusion of the first half, the World Cup hopeful drew eyes around the nation flashing his crafty dribbling skills by sending multiple Timbers defenders stumbling as he danced his way to the penalty spot. Off-balance, Luna fired to the far post, nearly slotting it in for his second of the day.
Iron Men
After RSL Homegrown centerback Justen Glad subbed off in the 61st minute, just two eligible “Iron Man” campaigns remained intact, as Captain Rafa Cabral and recently-extended MF Noel Caliskan own a perfect 900 minutes played in 10 games this season.
Earning his first clean sheet of the year was no easy task. but Captain Cabral pulled his weight to keep Portland off the scoresheet, denying the Timbers’ only clear-cut chances in the 26th and 27th minutes, first fisting a headed chance away for a corner before another save a minute later.
Facing off against his former club with the ink still drying after signing his extension through the 2028-29 season, Caliskan locked down the midfield. Defensively sound, the Cologne, Germany-born man assisted Cabral and others in a strong defensive shutout performance, nearly finding his name on the scoresheet by forcing Timbers goalkeeper James Pantemis to make two quality saves, denying Caliskan his first goal of the campaign.
Back to their winning ways by improving to 5-1-0 (W-L-T) at home, the Claret-and-Cobalt will now travel to the Lone Star State to face off against FC Dallas this Saturday at Toyota Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. MT, with broadcast available on Apple TV.
