Real Salt Lake delivered a spirited performance Wednesday night at America First Field, creating chances throughout the night but ultimately falling 0-2 to Inter Miami CF in what is believed could be global icon Lionel Messi’s lone visit to Utah. Despite the result, several sparkling moments highlighted the Claret-and-Cobalt’s effort, led by Captain Rafael Cabral and emerging homegrown star Zavier Gozo.

Cabral’s Commanding Presence Keeps RSL Alive

In a match that demanded resilience, RSL Captain Cabral once again proved why he is one of the League’s most reliable shot-stoppers.

The Brazilian goalkeeper came up with a massive save in the 21st minute, denying Messi in a one-on-one opportunity to keep the match level at 0-0. His quick reaction and prescient positioning preserved RSL’s early momentum and energized the overflowing home crowd of 21,512, RSL’s 10th consecutive sellout in Sandy.

Cabral wasn’t done there. Late in the match, the veteran of 500+ global games stepped up again in the 90th minute, punching away a dangerous free kick from Messi to prevent further damage and keep RSL within reach. His composure and leadership anchored the defense throughout the night.

Gozo’s Energy Creates Early and Late Chances

On the attacking end, 19-year-old Utah native Gozo continued to showcase his growing influence in the RSL attack.

Just minutes into the match, Gozo created the first dangerous opportunity, delivering a threatening cross into the box that found rookie striker Sergi Solans, whose header narrowly missed wide.

Gozo remained active throughout the match, constantly applying pressure to Miami’s backline. In the 54th minute, he nearly broke the deadlock with a shot that sailed just over the crossbar following a clear breakaway. Minutes later, he continued to test the defense, including a curling effort in the 64th minute that slipped just past the far post.

His ability to create space, deliver dangerous balls, and generate chances kept RSL on the front foot for large stretches of the match.

Near Misses Define RSL’s Night

RSL came inches away from finding the breakthrough on multiple occasions.

Forward Morgan Guilavogui thought he had opened the scoring early in the match with a finish inside the 18-yard box, only for the goal to be adjudged offside.

In the second half, Alex Katranis tested the Miami goalkeeper with a well-struck effort in the 59th minute, while Diego Luna nearly produced a moment of magic in the 78th minute, sending a free kick just over the top-left corner.

Despite the attacking pressure, RSL was unable to convert its opportunities into goals.

Record Crowd, Playoff Atmosphere

The night was played in front of a sold-out crowd of 21,512 fans, marking the fourth-largest attendance in America First Field history, providing a playoff-like atmosphere in Sandy.

Final Takeaway

While the result didn’t go RSL’s way, the performance told a different story. From Cabral’s clutch saves to Gozo’s relentless attacking presence, the Claret-and-Cobalt showed flashes of quality and fight.

On another night, a few inches make the difference - and RSL likely walks away with a result.

The foundation remains strong as Mastroeni’s squad looks to bounce back and turn such performances into points.

Real Salt Lake hits the road to close out its three-match week this Sunday, April 26, taking on the LA Galaxy in Carson California at Dignity Health Sports Park. Kickoff is slated for 5pm MT and will be available to stream exclusively on AppleTV+.
