A Letter to URFC Family from Amy Rodriguez

Hi Soccer Family,

It’s safe to say that no one could have predicted what has transpired over the last couple weeks. With no plan set in place, or history to look back on, the Coronavirus has truly left us in uncharted waters.

It’s during times like these that I lean on my faith, my family, and the important life lessons that soccer has taught me.

Soccer lesson #1: Control the Controllables

Right now we are unable to stop this virus, and we can not heal those who are hurting, but it is important to focus on the things we can control. Our own personal behaviors have such a big impact right now.

Soccer lesson #2: Do Your Role

While we can’t eradicate Coronavirus, we can help to slow the spread. Social distancing is a new term for everyone, but it’s one that we need to embrace. By taking the time to be in our homes and away from others, we can hopefully slow the spread, and play our ever-important role in this.

Soccer lesson #3: Always Strive to Be Better

Let’s continue to push ourselves to be better at washing our hands and sterilizing our homes. These don’t take much talent, but by working to be the best at them, we are positioning ourselves to be safer and healthier.

Soccer Lesson #4: Be Prepared

You never know when the coach may call on you to go in the game, but you have to be ready to step up when the time comes. Similarly, with new information coming out every day about Coronavirus, it is important for us to be prepared for different situations and always be ready.

Soccer Lesson #5 Be A Good Teammate:

Support those who do not have the luxury of staying inside --  doctors, nurses, pharmacists, delivery and grocery store workers and many more. Thank them for their tireless work to help those who are sick and for doing what is necessary to keep all of us safe.

I know we all miss soccer, and it is not easy to be away from something you love, but I know that this is only temporary and the more we work together, the faster we can all return to what we love.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the RioT.

Thank you!
Amy Rodriguez
