Game at a Glance: Real Monarchs Fall in Home Opener

Real Monarchs 0 vs. LA Galaxy II 2
May 14, 2021; Zions Bank Stadium
Real Monarchs (0-1-1, 1 points); LA Galaxy II (2-1-1, 7 points)
Man of the Match: Midfielder Sam Brown tied for the highest passing accuracy (88%) of any player on the pitch, including LA Galaxy II players. In a gritty and physical match he managed the midfield and led the team’s defensive efforts, while also creating several chances at goal.
Telling Stat: Real Monarchs were called for 26 conceded fouls, while LA Galaxy II only received 12, a stark contrast between the two sides in what was an equally tenacious battle on both sides. In comparison, last week’s match saw 21 fouls called for the Monarchs and 20 for San Antonio FC, during which there were two red cards and four yellow cards apiece.
What You Missed: In the Real Monarchs’ return to Zions Bank Stadium eight players took the pitch as either current or former members of the RSL Academy, including Griffin Dillon, Abel Mendoza and Pearse O’Brien who made their professional debuts. Including substitutions, the on-field squad had an average age of 20 years old, with captain James Moberg being the oldest at 27 and Jaziel Orozco the youngest at just 16 years old.

So What: Despite suffering a loss, the Monarchs will head into next week with several positive moments around the corner. Recently-announced defender Timi Sobowale will join the team at the start of this week, followed closely behind by midfielder Josimar Quintero, both prior to Friday’s match against Austin Bold FC at Zions Bank Stadium, finally rounding out the Monarch’s offseason roster revamp that includes a slew of internationals, first team loans and young RSL academy players.
