With URFC’s record breaking 2026 regular season coming to a close last weekend, the Royals are hungry to snap its three-match scoring drought in search of furthering its historic run and completing the quest of a playoff win.

This special edition of playoff storylines will take a deeper look into key URFC players, recent Utah scoring struggles, the format for the NWSL Playoffs presented by Google Pixel and Friday's matchup against the San Diego Wave.

URFC Look to Veteran Leadership to Rebound in Postseason Debut

With the 2026 NWSL season officially over, the Utah Royals are gearing up for the first round of postseason play this Friday. Although the final few matches of the season proved difficult with URFC only earning one point in its last three matches, the Utah side took care of business early in the season, breaking club records to close out the season positioned inside the top eight and earn its first-ever playoff berth.

The Royals currently sit at 270 minutes without netting a goal, a drought no club enjoys especially heading into a highly competitive postseason matchup. Although struggling on the finishing end, URFC has a plethora of key attacking pieces and veteran players who have shown their ability to step up in big moments throughout 2026.

Canadian forward Cloé Lacasse has been automatic all season long, netting an impressive eight goals and 10 assists to help lift the Royals to a club best 14 wins in 2026. Heading into the Friday evening match against San Diego, Lacasse and the attack will hope to see forward Cece Delzer and midfielder Narumi return from injury and be made available as both have continuously brought impressive play to the pitch all season long.

Along with the potential return of key offensive pieces bolstering the Royals front line is a defensive group proven to withstand the attack of any opponent. 28-year-old defender Kate Del Fava has been a constant brick wall for the Royals this season, winning an impressive 33 tackles while maintaining a remarkable passing accuracy of 84% en route to becoming one of the league's eight Ironwoman for the third consecutive season, playing all 2,700 minutes of the regular season.

Not only do the Utah Royals have high-level talent peppered throughout its roster but, an impressive 12 rostered players who have played on at least one NWSL postseason team in their careers. With the help of its veterans and “togetherness” mentality, URFC is in a position to recapture its earlier season form and come out with a victory on Friday evening.

Snapping the Winless Streak Against San Diego Wave FC

The NWSL quarterfinal match on Friday, October 6 will be a road match for URFC, taking place at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego California. The NWSL playoff structure is set as a single elimination format with each of the eight teams who qualified playing over the course of this weekend to set up the semifinal round taking place the weekend of November 13. If the Royals are to secure a victory on Friday evening the squad will punch its ticket to the semifinal round and await the rest of the weekend's results to see who its next opponent may be.

Before looking too far ahead in the NWSL postseason possibilities, it is important to focus on the opening match that lies ahead against a competitive San Diego side.

As the Utah Royals gear up for its first-ever postseason appearance Head Coach Jimmy Coenraets and his squad are facing a familiar and historically difficult foe in the San Diego Wave. The Royals have never earned a point against this opponent, furthermore going winless in each of its last six matchups since the Return to Royalty in 2024. While history may suggest the Royals are a heavy underdog, the postseason is a different beast where anything can happen and any team, regardless of seed can come out on top.

En-route to securing a club first playoff victory and a first-ever victory against the San Diego Wave, the squad will need to play as one to break down the attack of two key offensive pieces on the Wave’s roster. Teenage sensation Melanie Barcenas became the youngest-ever contracted NWSL player at 15 years and 138 days old on March 21, 2023. Since then the San Diego native has enjoyed an impressive 2026 season, netting seven goals and two assists to help lift her squad to second place. At 19-years-old the forward has high level ball control and a striking ability that makes life difficult for opposing defenses.

Along with thwarting the attack of Barcenas, URFC will also need to shut down American forward Trinity Byars. With 11 goals and three assists this season Byars sits atop the Wave’s 2026 Golden Boot leaderboard and brings speed and elite finishing for the home side.

With a multitude of talent not previously named throughout the Wave’s roster the Friday evening matchup is sure to be a battle with both sides hungry for a victory and a spot in the NWSL semifinal match. URFC will look to its veterans to keep the home side at bay and with what could be the return of multiple key roster pieces the Royals are poised to shock the league and fight until the final whistle.

The 2026 NWSL Quarterfinal matchup at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California will take place on Friday, November 6 with kickoff slated for 8 p.m. MT. While the match will be streaming exclusively on Prime Video, URFC will also be hosting a special postseason watch party for fans who can join in to watch the action on the second floor at America First Field, claim your free tickets here.
