HARRISON, New Jersey (Sunday, November 1, 2026) – Utah Royals FC (14-11-5, 47 points, 7th NWSL) dropped its final game of the 2026 regular season, falling 2-0 to Gotham FC (18-7-5, 61 points, 1st NWSL) at Sports Illustrated Stadium. With the win, Gotham FC claimed its first-ever NWSL Shield title, while Utah finished its historic 2026 season in seventh place and is now set to face the San Diego Wave in its first-ever playoff match.
Head Coach Jimmy Coenraets made one positional change and three personnel changes to the starting XI following the hard-fought 0-0 draw against Seattle Reign FC. With Narumi and Cece Delzer resting and recovering from minor injuries prior to the NWSL playoffs, Madison Hammond entered the lineup in the defensive midfield, while newcomer Jameese Joseph entered at the 10. Miyabi returned to the lineup at right back, pushing captain Paige Cronin up to right wing against Gotham.
The league leaders showed their strength early, grabbing a go-ahead goal just nine minutes into the Decision Day bout. Gotham’s move started with Midge Purce, who drove down the right touchline and dribbled past Nuria Rábano before making a low-driven cross in the box. After taking a deflection, the ball made its way to the back post where it was turned in by Guro Reiten for a 1-0 lead.
Utah came close to responding just moments later, forcing a critical intervention by Gotham’s star shot-stopper, Ann-Katrin Berger, in the 13th minute. From her native left flank, Rábano whipped in a cross that found an open Miyabi at the back post. The Japanese international volleyed the ball towards goal, but her effort was denied by an outstretched Berger.
Both sides played strongly defensively in the latter part of the first half, with each squad allowing only two shots on target in the opening 45 minutes. Apart from an open volley from Savannah McCaskill that missed above the crossbar, neither team came close to scoring the match’s second goal, and Gotham carried a 1-0 lead into the break.
Neither side was able to get close to the goal right after halftime, with the first shot of the second half not coming until the 63rd minute. The home side continued to build towards a second, fueled by the entry of young USWNT star Jaedyn Shaw. Gotham’s young forward had an opportunity in the 68th, missing just wide of the post with a right-footed shot, but made up for it moments later when she doubled the host’s lead. Once again, it was Purce who created the chance, delivering a cross into the box that required the mildest of touches from Shaw to give the home side a 2-0 lead.
Gotham held on to win the Decision Day battle, and claimed its first-ever NWSL Shield title on Sunday. With the result, the Utah Royals finished its historic NWSL season in seventh place, and will play the San Diego Wave in the opening round of the playoffs next weekend.
The Royals’ first-ever playoff match is set to kickoff next Friday, November 6, at 8:00 p.m. MT from Snapdragon Stadium, with the match available to stream on Amazon Prime.

Guro Reiten (Unassisted) 9’: Purce took her space down the right sideline, making a move past Rábano before crossing the ball into a chaotic box. After taking a deflection, the ball found its way to Reiten at the back post, who beat her defender to finish with a left-footed strike.
Jaedyn Shaw (Midge Purce) 80’: Lavelle played the ball out wide to Purce, who cut onto her left foot before delivering a cross into the path of Shaw in the box. Shaw redirected the pass with a slight touch, enough to push the ball past McGlynn for a 2-0 lead.
