Utah Royals FC returns home this Sunday, August 2, to face Sophia Wilson and Portland Thorns FC at America First Field. After an impressive offensive performance that didn’t yield a goal in a 1-0 loss to league-leading Washington Spirit, the Royals will get a second chance to earn three points against another of the NWSL’s top five teams this weekend.
This edition of storylines will analyze changes to Utah’s defense, highlight the Royal’s desire to return to scoring ways, and briefly recall the Club’s history with Portland.
Kaleigh Riehl Returns to Royals’ Defense
Wednesday night against the Spirit, veteran defender Kaleigh Riehl returned to the starting lineup for the first time since May 30, reuniting the center back partnership that thrived during Utah's historic 10-game unbeaten streak. Alongside two-time ironwoman Kate Del Fava, the defensive duo has started 12 games together this season, within which they’ve conceded only 9 goals and secured a five-game clean sheet streak from April 3 (vs Chicago Stars) to May 10 (at Bay FC). After conceding six goals in the first two games back from the break, Utah has only conceded three in its last three games, with Riehl’s presence further securing a Royals’ defense that has shown significant improvement.
Another factor in Utah’s recent defensive success has been Mandy McGlynn, who continues to rise to the occasion when tested. The Royals goalkeeper made five saves against the North Carolina Courage on July 25, and she is approaching a 14th shutout that would give her the sole lead of the Club record—a title she currently shares with former Spirit GK Nicole Barnhart. The Thorns have scored in five consecutive games against Utah dating back to July 27, 2024, a streak McGlynn and the Royals defense will be eager to break to get a result on Sunday.
Creating And Capitalizing On Chances
Despite a dominant offensive outing against Washington, Utah was unable to finish the chances it created, with both players and Head Coach Jimmy Coenraets acknowledging the importance of capitalizing on those “five second moments”. Fortunately for Utah, the Royals have several players capable of taking advantage against a Portland side that has conceded 14 goals over its last nine matches.
Leading the way for Utah’s offense this season is Canadian international Cloé Lacasse, who has notched an impressive six goals and four assists while starting all 17 matches this season. Lacasse can do it all for the Royals in attack, consistently displaying her premier game intelligence, chance creation, and elite footwork against any defense she faces. Right behind Lacasse in the Club’s golden boot race is Mina Tanaka, who has scored five times and assisted four in the 14 matches she's appeared in. After returning from an injury sustained over the international break, Tanaka is already back contributing to the Royals offense, scoring a brilliant header in the 4-1 win over the North Carolina Courage. Both Lacasse and Tanaka are nearing Amy Rodriguez's Club scoring record, and would love to do it this Sunday against Portland.
One of Utah’s most effective chance creators this season has been Nuria Rábano, who in addition to serving as part of the defensive line has been crucial to the Royals attack. Rábano tallied two assists in the win against North Carolina and is now up to three on the season—one behind Lacasse and Tanaka. Rábano’s crossing and ball accuracy are two things that define her play, and they are part of the reason she is ranked third among Royals in chances created with 22.
Utah vs Portland: A Brief History
The Royals have played the Thorns six times since the “Return of Royalty”, with Utah leading the series 3-1-2 (W-L-T). In their last meeting, Sophia Wilson rescued a point for the Thorns at the death by converting a penalty in the 91st minute to tie the contest at 2-2. The last two encounters between the sides have been played at Providence Park, with Utah claiming four points as the visitor in those matches. While recent history points in Utah’s favor, the last time the two sides met at America First Field it was Portland that took home the three points with a narrow 1-0 win on April 11, 2025.
