Utah Royals FC head to Colorado this Saturday, August 8, for a key road match against Denver Summit FC at Centennial Stadium. Fresh off a historic 5-1 victory over the Portland Thorns, the most goals scored in a single match for Utah, the Royals will look to carry that momentum into another crucial contest against a Denver side that sits three points outside the playoff line.

Kiana Palacios’ Consistency Across the Front Line
This season, Head Coach Jimmy Coenraets has emphasized offensive pressing as a defining identity of the team. Leading the effort has been Kiana Palacios, whose relentless running, front press, and anticipation allow her teammates to recognize where the ball will likely fall after the team win back possession.
The Mexican international has played a pivotal role in leading the Royals' high press, an approach that has been instrumental in several of the club's victories this season. Her relentless work rate, closing speed, and ability to pressure defenders have made it extremely difficult for opposing teams to build out from the back, frequently forcing turnovers in dangerous areas and setting the tone for the Royals' defensive intensity.
A prime example of Palacios’ ability to read the game and forward pressure came in the first meeting between Denver and Utah at America First Field, where she anticipated the direction of a loose ball, positioned herself quickly, and turned a defensive moment into a scoring opportunity. Fellow forward Cloé Lacasse won the ball off a Summit defender, creating a chance for Palacios to pounce on the loose ball inside the penalty area. The Mexican striker clinically fired a left-footed finish into the roof of the net beyond the outstretched Denver goalkeeper, to score her first NWSL goal.
Most recently in the 5-1 victory against Portland, Palacios’ anticipation aided her in scoring her third goal this season. Running in between the two Thorns center back before cleverly finishing the cross with a back heel finish that left the away team’s goalkeeper frozen in place. In the same match, Palacios displayed her relentless pressing as the Thorns were forced to resort to long balls to get past the collective Royals front press.
History of the Continental Divide Cup
The Royals have faced off against the Summit once since Denver entered the NWSL with Utah winning the first meeting. A 72nd minute penalty from Mina Tanaka proved to be the difference, lifting Utah Royals FC to a 2-1 victory and securing all three points at America First Field.
Since returning from the NWSL break, Denver Summit FC is 1-3-2 (W-L-T), most recently falling 2-0 at home on Wednesday to the North Carolina Courage. In a back-and-forth contest, the Courage broke through early in the second half by converting a penalty before sealing the result with a transition goal late in the match.
The weekend matchup against Denver Summit FC is scheduled to kickoff at 2:00 p.m. MT at Centennial Stadium streaming on ION. The Royals then return home the following weekend to take on Bay FC with kickoff scheduled for 8:00 p.m. MT at America First Field on Friday, August 14th.
