After a week and a half away from the comforts of America First Field, Utah Royals FC returned to the Wasatch Front for a midweek matchup against top ranked Washington Spirit. The high energy Pride Night match ended in a tough 1-0 loss after lightning delayed play midway through the first half for just over an hour.
Entering the Wednesday evening match, Spanish midfielder Ana Tejada reached an impressive milestone, making her 50th start with the Royals, joining Ironwoman Kate Del Fava and goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn as the only URFC players to reach that number of starts. The Spaniard has been a key piece in the midfield for Utah in 2026, injecting stabilty and a high level of awareness to create offensive opportunities while also supporting the squad in defensive battles.
While the Royals conceded in the 28th minute, Tejada was a bright light throughout the hard fought match, working seamlessly through the middle of the pitch to thwart any attacks by the visitors, helping to keep the Washington side from bringing the ball into Utah’s 18-yard box for the first 23 minutes of the second half.
Tejada Sets the Tone in the Midfield
As Utah battled through the second half in search of the equalizer it was Tejada’s grit and energy that helped to lift URFC in taking back the momentum lost after the 28th minute goal by Washington forward Trinity Rodman. The 24-year-old impressed with her abilities in the air, battling to beat out her opponent in almost every aerial duel she encountered.
Tejada has continued to cement herself as a major component to the Royals’ success in 2026, starting in 14 of the 15 matches she’s appeared in while contributing to multiple URFC goals, tallying two assists. The Spanish midfielder brings an extra level of energy to the pitch, setting the tempo with her relentless work rate, crisp distribution, and ability to connect with every line on the field. Whether she’s breaking up an attack by using her body to get in front of her opponent, winning the 50/50 ball or sparking a counter with a perfectly timed pass, Tejada’s influence often extends beyond the stat sheet.
In her third year in the league, Tejada’s versatility has made her one of Utah’s most dependable players. With her comfort operating as both a ball-winning presence and a creative playmaker, the Spaniard consistently brings balance in the middle of the pitch. She has a unique knack for finding pockets of space, keeping possession under pressure and making smart decisions that allow Utah to gain control of a match. The midfielder's composure on the ball has become a catalyst for the Royals attacking stability when the squad is forced to defend and build out of its own half.
With the presence of defensive Captain Del Fava who has now played in every single minute of 69-straight matches, the two worked as a brick wall, outpacing and outmuscling their opponents to lift the home side in maintaining a higher level of possession and offensive power, besting the visitors with 19 shots compared to the Spirit’s 6.
As URFC continues to push through the 2026 campaign and fight to stay near the top of the NWSL standings, Tajada’s grit and heart will continue to be significant in the squad's continued success. As the midfield can often play an instrumental role in winning games, the Royals have a skilled player in Tejada who can dictate any battle she encounters. Her determination, vision and consistency have made her indispensable within the locker room. As Tejada continues to work with her teammates at a high level, the Utah midfield can be one of the team’s greatest strengths moving forward.
