SAN DIEGO, California (Friday, August 21 2026) – Utah Royals FC (11-7-3, 36 points, 3rd NWSL) fell 4-2 on the road to San Diego Wave (11-7-3, 36 points, 4th NWSL) on Friday night at Snapdragon Stadium. After battling back from deficit twice the visitors were unable to secure a result.

Royals Head Coach Jimmy Coenraets made no personnel changes to his starting lineup following the exciting 3-2 comeback victory over fellow 2024 expansion side Bay FC last Friday, August 14. The victory shattered yet another new club record, eleven wins in a single season.

Although the Belgian boss made no changes to the starting XI, Mexican international Kiana Palacios was available off of the bench tonight after missing last week’s match due to hip injury. The forward has three goals thus far in 2026 and brings striking power and a high level press to the pitch in every match she features in.

The evening began much like the Royals home match last Friday with the visitors conceding a goal just four minutes into the game and forcing the squad to play from behind early. URFC continued to showcase belief despite conceding early, finding offensive opportunities with forward Cece Delzer earning the squad's first tangible shot in the 28th minute. Just one minute later the Royals found the answer after Delzer laid the ball off to Japanese star Mina Tanaka who buried the ball with precision into the top left corner to even up the score at 1-1.

The equalizer was Tanaka’s second goal in as many matches and with Delzer setting up the shot for her Japanese teammate, she now has three assists this season. In the 40th minute, San Diego was able to regain the lead, sending the Royals into the locker room down 2-1.

Utah Royals FC came out lightning-fast to start the second half with Canadian forward Cloé Lacasse earning her ninth assist of the season, shoveling the ball to Tanaka who buried the shot for her second goal of the evening and equalizing the score once again. The high-level pressure the Royals have become so well known for paid off once again and breathed life into the visitors.

With the assist Lacasse now ties Portland’s Pietra Tordin and Kansas City’s Croix Bethune for the league lead and becomes the third player to reach 15+ goal contributions this season, joining Tordin (16) and Washington’s Trinity Rodman (15). With the brace against San Diego, Tanaka overtook former Royal Amy Rodriguez to become the club’s all-time leading goal scorer with 15. The Japanese midfielder earned her second career brace and first this season breaking yet another record and becoming the first-ever Utah Royal to record multiple double-goal games in club history.

In the 63rd minute the home side was able to break through the Utah defense, retaking the lead. Just seven minutes later San Diego doubled its lead, scoring its fourth goal of the evening. URFC continued to fight, showcasing grit and heart and seemingly found its third goal of the evening in the 82nd minute but the score was ultimately found to be offside after VAR review.

While the Royals battled back from multiple deficits, the four goals scored by the home side proved too much, ultimately keeping the visitors from earning its first-ever points against the difficult San Diego side.

The Royals remain on the road for a second consecutive match next Saturday, August 29 to take on the Orlando Pride. Kickoff for next weekend's matchup is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. MT and will be streaming on NWSL+.
