The Utah Royals are thrilled to announce the latest iteration of the “Return of Royalty” in the form of the Royals new primary kit, “The Ascent”.
“Just like the mountains, the team is supposed to represent the entire state,” said Real Salt Lake & Utah Royals VP of Marketing and Game Production, Tyler Gibbons. “So we wanted to have the Utah Royals tie it into the identity of the greater umbrella of this One Utah movement.”
When the design process for the jersey began in 2022, URFC Owner, Ryan Smith, noted how he was excited to bring back the Jazz’s purple mountain jerseys in the future, and that he had a vision for a “One Utah” look that would connect the state's professional sports teams.
“That's kind of how the Royals and RSL Kit started to come into shape,” Gibbons said.
“We were like, how do we tie in to the RSL and the Jazz looks but have the Royals do it in their own way?”
The answer emerged as a way to symbolize a team that had been here before, but now was never going away, just like the mountains themselves.
The Club decided to move away from the Southern Utah influences of its past branding, and into the mountain landscapes that are found throughout the state. This kit decision process also helped stir conversations concerning the Royals’ new branding and crest, where mountain details can be found throughout.
The most prominent detail of “The Ascent” are the repeating summits and peaks that flow one after another, up and down the kit. They’re meant to represent the vastness of the Utah landscape, where there are mountains as far as the eye can see.
A fun easter egg for Royals fans who frequent the Wasatch range, Gibbons specifically mentions the rolling mountain range outside Brighton, Utah, as you cross over to Park City as inspiration for “The Ascent”.
“I hope that's the symbolism of the Royals,” Gibbons said. “That they were here once before, but they’re now a part of the Utah fabric of life from here on out. Just like the mountains.”
