Real Monarchs Earn Scoreless Draw Against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC

HERRIMAN, Utah (Friday, October 8, 2021) – Real Monarchs (4-18-6, 18 points) played to a 0-0 draw against Mountain Division opponent Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Zions Bank Stadium.

RSL Academy forward Axel Kei became the youngest-ever to make a professional appearance in American team sports history, subsequently breaking the USL Championship record at 13 years, 9 months and 9 days.

The first half was tightly-contested without many chances for either side. In the 37th minute, the Monarchs saw a chance on a set-piece free kick from Justin Portillo that found the head of Kyle Adams on the left side of the six-yard box, but Adams’ headed fell neatly to the goalkeeper and the sides remained scoreless. Just before the break, Andrew Brody looped a dangerous ball into the box, but Charlie Wehan’s flicked-on header missed to the right and the half ended 0-0.

The Monarchs first chance of the second half came in the 56th minute. Second-half substitute Leo Torres danced through three defenders before firing a left-footed shot, but it missed wide of the right post. In the 85th minute, Milan Iloski dribbled past a defender on the left side of the box and sent a grass-burning ball across the face of goal towards Kei, but a Switchbacks FC defender recovered just in time to knock it away, denying the home side’s final chance and ending the match with a scoreless draw.

UP NEXT: Real Monarchs stay home for the second of four-consecutive matches at Zions Bank Stadium, facing Austin Bold FC for an afternoon matchup on Saturday, October 16 at 1:00 p.m. MT. The match can be streamed on ESPN+ and the KSL TV app.
