HERRIMAN, Utah (Monday, June 22, 2026) - Real Monarchs DF and Captain Wes Charpie announces his retirement, effective immediately, following on the heels of Real Monarchs’ 1-0 loss away at Tacoma Defiance on Sunday night. Charpie hangs up his boots after a decade-long playing career to pursue other opportunities within the Club, with specific role and responsibilities to be announced later this summer.
“I will cherish the memories I’ve made and the relationships I’ve built along the way,” Charpie reflected. “It's amazing to think how much this game can change you as a person. The ups and downs are part of the journey and it’s something I'll take with me for the rest of my life.
I’m excited for this new chapter in having the chance to impact the next generation. I’m grateful to RSL for the opportunity and I’m excited to get started”.
Not selected in Sunday’s lineup, Charpie ends his playing career with a fairytale ending, having scored on his final professional touch. The goal arrived in front of the home fans in Herriman back in June 13, proving to be the game-winner in the Monarchs’ 4-1 win over Portland Timbers 2.
Drafted in the second round of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC out of the University of South Florida, Charpie signed with USL affiliate club Toronto FC II. Charpie would spend the next 10 years in the USL, making stops at Saint Louis FC and then Jacksonville Armada, overlapping time with then-head coach Mark Lowry, before making stops at Memphis 901 and Louisville City.
Charpie reunited with Lowry in 2025, signing with Real Monarchs. In his time with the Monarchs, the Florida native logged 22 appearances, starting in 17. During his career on the Wasatch Front, Charpie scored two goals whilst donning the Claret-and-Cobalt.
Providing a key veteran presence on a young Monarchs squad, Charpie has demonstrated invaluable leadership and mentorship qualities that will leave an imprint on the next generation of RSL products.
Real Monarchs continue its three-match West Coast road trip, next visiting Ventura County FC this Saturday, June 27, prior to concluding the road stint at LAFC 2 on July 5. The Monarchs return home on Sat., July 11, hosting Vancouver (3:30p MT kickoff).
