RSL Academy Products Shine in NCAA Tournament

The NCAA National Soccer Tournament is to the Round of 16 and though top-seeded Maryland and its three representatives from the Real Salt Lake Academy was upset by Providence, there is still a slew of RSL-Arizona alums in action as the tournament rolls on into its second week.


Here is an update on the progress of the Academy products after Sunday’s matches in the Round of 32.


Washington (14-6-0, 4-1 W vs. New Mexico; TBD vs. Denver)


Elijah Rice (pictured above) â€“ Made a big impact in his 35 minutes, scoring his third goal of the season in the 57th minute to put the game out of reach for the Huskies at 3-1 before ultimately advancing with the 4-1 victory.


Danny Gavin – Did not appear in Washington’s win.


Creighton (13-6-3, 3-2 W vs. Kentucky; Sat. vs. Providence)


Riggs Lennon – Creighton’s leading scorer started the match and played 65 minutes, but did not figure into the scoring in the win.


Evan Waldrep – The sophomore midfielder came off the bench and logged 28 minutes to help see out the victory.


Stanford (12-3-4, 2-0 W vs. Pacific; Sun. vs. Virginia)


Corey Baird – The path back toward College Cup started in good form on Sunday with a 2-0 victory and Baird started and played 49 minutes in the win, though he did not figure into the scoring.


Trevor Hyman – The senior midfielder played eight minutes off the bench to hold off Pacific in the win.


Louisville (13-5-2, 2-1 W vs. UCLA; Sun. vs. Notre Dame)


Tate Schmitt – His fourth goal of the season was a big one, as the sophomore forward scored overtime winner to send the Cardinals through to the next round.  He finished the match with a game-high six shots, putting five on target.


Jack Gayton – Opened scoring with his third goal of the season in just the third minute on Sunday and put all three of his shots on frame during 94 minutes of action.


Wake Forest (16-2-3, 2-0 W vs. Coastal Carolina; TBD vs. Southern Illinois-Edwardsville)


Alex Knox – Started and played the first 45 minutes in a 2-0 victory over Coastal Carolina.


Clemson (13-3-5, 2-1 W vs. South Carolina; Sun. vs. Albany)


Tanner Dieterich – Assisted on Clemson’s 93rd minute overtime winner.


Maryland (18-1-2, 5-4 L vs. Providence)


Amar Sejdic – The sophomore midfielder scored twice to stake the Terrapins to a 4-1 lead that was later squandered in a dramatic comeback by Providence.  He finishes the season with nine goals and nine assists.


Miles Stray – Did not appear in the match on Sunday.


Diego Silva – Did not appear in the match on Sunday.


UCLA (10-8-2, 2-1 L vs. Louisville)


Jose Hernandez – The Pac-12 Co-Player of the Year had two shots on the match, putting one on frame, but couldn’t figure into the scoring in UCLA’s ouster.


Erik Holt – The sophomore defender was among eight Bruins field players to go the distance on Sunday, playing all 94 minutes.


New Mexico (12-7-3, 4-1 L vs. Washington)


Aaron Herrera – The season ended for the sophomore standout, who was among five UNM players to register a shot on goal on the evening.


Josh Goss – The senior’s college career came to an end on Sunday, as the midfielder put one shot on goal in his 66 minutes of action.


Sam Gleadle – The junior forward logged 75 minutes in the defeat.


Lucas Seligman – Did not appear for the Lobos.


South Carolina (11-8-1, 2-1 L vs. Clemson)


Ive Burnett – Went the distance in his collegiate finale as the Gamecocks were ousted in overtime by Clemson.


UNLV (10-12-2, 3-0 L vs. Denver)


Jason Eng – Played 81 minutes, but UNLV’s magic run that saw the underdogs win the WAC title ended on Sunday with the 3-0 defeat.
