Waibel Addresses Martinez Loan Questions

Sandoval and Martinez vs LA full 0919

In recent weeks, news has surfaced of interest in Juan Manuel Martinez for a potential loan in Argentina with San Lorenzo.  And while the club has not contacted Real Salt Lake General Manager Craig Waibel to discuss any potential move, the RSL GM understands why teams have such profound interest in the Salt Lake forward that joined the team in August and made an instant impact.  However, he shot down the notion that RSL would allow such a move with a piece that is projected to have such a pivotal role with the club in 2016.

“Juan is obviously a very experienced professional in Argentina and had a really storied career prior to coming here.  There is a genuine interest from San Lorenzo to have him in.  From a club perspective, I have not been directly contacted at any point from San Lorenzo.  I know that it’s fun for people to write about it and read about it.  But I haven’t received any phone calls or any emails from San Lorenzo,” Waibel said.  “I don’t think it’s in Real Salt Lake’s best interest.  It’s pretty easy to say that having not been contacted in any way, but it would take a pretty extreme circumstance in order to allow that in this particular off-season.”

Martinez had one goal and one assist in eight MLS matches, totaling two goals and one assist in 10 matches across all competitions.
