For the first time since May, Real Salt Lake had a player recognized on the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week, with left back Demar Phillips earning the honor.
Phillips was part of a defense that limited an explosive Seattle Sounders FC offense to just one shot on goal in RSL’s 2-0 win over the defending Supporters’ Shield winners on Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium.
“I really thought our back four and Kyle [Beckerman] and Luke [Mulholland] did a great job because you can see Obafemi [Martins] comes, tucks into the midfield and I thought the communication all night was very good. I thought they covered for each other extremely well and that’s something that we stressed all week long, and it looked like a unit out there, and that’s what I was really pleased about,” RSL Head Coach Jeff Cassar said after the match. “Nick [Rimando] didn’t have too much to do tonight but what he did he was clean, and that’s a real solid night for our goalkeeper and back six.”
Phillips was joined on Team of the Week by goalkeeper Clint Irwin (Colorado Rapids); defenders Maynor Figueroa (Colorado Rapids) and Robbie Rogers (LA Galaxy); midfielders Sebastian Lletget (LA Galaxy), Anibal Godoy (San Jose Earthquakes), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC) and Shea Salinas (San Jose Earthquakes); and forwards Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy), Will Bruin (Houston Dynamo) and Quincy Amarikwa (San Jose Earthquakes).
