Through the first eight weeks of the 2015 MLS season, Real Salt Lake goalkeepers Nick Rimando and Jeff Attinella accounted for three of the MLS Save of the Week honorees. Now, Attinella is up for the award again in Week 21 as he looks to earn the honor again for his save of Jacob Peterson in the second half to help RSL to a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City.
It was one of two big saves Attinella made on Peterson, this one coming in the 65th minute as Sporting got out on the break and Peterson came as the trailing runner, but Attinella deflected his shot over the crossbar.
“I just saw that the ball was going to be cut back, so I did my best to try and come out and stay big. Luckily, he kind of hit it into me,” Attinella said after the match. “I’m sure that he won’t be happy that I saved those two, but obviously it’s good for the team, and great to get three points.”
It was one of five saves on the night for Attinella, who improved to 3-2-1 on the season.
