Rio Tinto Stadium celebration

News Stand 5/15/15

CONCACAF announced Thursday that the semifinal and final matches of the U-23 Olympic qualifiers will be held at Rio Tinto Stadium in October.

Chris Kamrani of the Salt Lake Tribune writes, “The United States men’s national team, headlined by U-23 captain and RSL midfielder Luis Gil, is seeded in Group A, which starts at Sporting Park on Oct. 1.” He continues, “This will be Rio Tinto’s first time hosting an Olympic qualifying event.”

RSL president Bill Manning said, “We are pleased again to host a significant international qualifier at Rio Tinto Stadium and appreciate CONCACAF awarding these games to our great fans.”

Rio Tinto Stadium has hosted several major soccer events and it will be good to add Olympic qualifiers to that list. If the United States national team performs well, fans will have a chance of seeing RSL’s Luis Gil represent the U.S. team on his home field in Salt Lake.
