Real Salt Lake History v. Seattle Sounders FC

Real Salt Lake comes into Saturday’s clash with a 1-1-2 record all-time against Sounders FC in the teams’ brief two-year history. Neither team has secured a road win in the series, the teams splitting home triumphs during the 2009 regular season – Seattle’s first in MLS – before settling for ties in 2010.

The two clubs kicked off RSL’s home schedule a year ago in dramatic fashion last April 10, the game ending in a 2-2 draw thanks to a stoppage-time goal from FW Álvaro Saborío. Seattle MF Steve Zakuani opened the scoring in the 11th minute, only to be matched on a diving header from MF Will Johnson in the 53rd minute. Seattle would re-take the lead through DF Tyrone Marshall the 72nd minute, but it was Saborío that would steal the show in his Rio Tinto Stadium debut, marking it in true fashion by netting his first career MLS goal off a MF Nelson Gonzalez corner kick in the game’s dying moments.

The two teams met again on Sept. 9 in RSL’s first trip back to Qwest Field since its MLS Cup 2009 triumph over the LA Galaxy. In front of more than 36,000 raucous Seattle supporters, backup GK Kyle Reynish stood tall in his second career MLS start, making a pair of saves and notching his first professional clean sheet in a gutty 0-0 draw that also featured the MLS debut of DF Chris Schuler.
