SANDY, Utah (Saturday, July 20, 2019) – Real Salt Lake (9-9-3, 30 points) came back from a second-half deficit to earn a 1-1 draw with Minnesota United FC at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday night as DF Marcelo Silva notched RSL’s lone goal on the night. marking his second goal of the 2019 season.

The first half of action saw a physical match play out as both sides planted physical tackles on one another. Minnesota had the best opportunity of the first 45 minutes, forcing GK Nick Rimando into an acrobatic save just minutes before the halftime whistle, preserving the 0-0 scoreline at the break.


In the 58th minute of the match, the Loons found the breakthrough when Darwin Quintero was left alone at the back post to redirect an easy header into the back of the net. RSL answered back in the 70th minute when Silva fired home his second goal of the year with a cool side volley inside the penalty area. A frantic finish to the match saw MNUFC nearly steal the full three points when Jan Gregus slammed a curling shot off of the goal’s upright in the 88th minute. In stoppage time, set pieces earned by both sides capped the evening as the teams shared the spoils on the night.

MIN: Darwin Quintero (Mason Toye, Jan Gregus), 58th minute: A corner kick swung in by Gregus found the head of Toye who flicked the ball towards the far post where Quintero was waiting. Quintero had a wide-open header at the back post as he redirected the shot into the back of the net for the first goal of the match.


RSL: Marcelo Silva (Jefferson Savarino), 70th minute: A corner kick from albert RusnĂ¡k ran through the traffic inside the penalty area to Savarino at the back post. The Venezuelan drove a low pass into the middle of the penalty area where Silva fired home his second of the year to draw RSL level.

- DF Tony Beltran (knee), DF Nedum Onuoha (adductor) and FW Sam Johnson (quad) were out of action due to injury.


- DF Aaron Herrera was unavailable while serving a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation.
