It is a busy week for the Utah Royals FC international team players as the SheBelieves and Algarve Cups kick-off tomorrow, followed by the Cup of Nations on Thursday. The schedule this week includes the USWNT trio of DFs Becky Sauerbrunn and Kelley O’Hara, and FW Christen Press participating in the 2019 SheBelieves Cup. Also representing URFC and appearing in international matches include Canadian MFs Desiree Scott and Diana Matheson, Gunny Jonsdottir (Iceland), and DF Rachel Corsie (Scotland). DF Katie Bowen will take part in the Cup of Nations tournament with the New Zealand Football Ferns.
SheBelieves Cup
The first stop for the USWNT is Philadelphia, where the team will open the SheBelieves Cup at Talen Energy Stadium tomorrow, at 7:00 p.m. ET. The U.S. and Japan have previously met in three world finals. In 2011, the U.S. lost to Japan in penalty kicks during the World Cup final. Then, in a rematch at the 2012 Olympic games, the U.S. took home the gold medal and lastly, when the U.S. dominated 5-2 in the 2015 World Cup final to take home another gold. Sauerbrunn, O’Hara, and Press were all members of the 2015 Women’s World Cup champions team.
Algarve Cup
URFC teammates Scott and Matheson (Canada), Jonsdottir (Iceland), and Corsie (Scotland) will all go against one another in the Algarve Cup held in Portugal. Canada and Iceland will open the tournament and go head-to-head on, February 27. The Canadian duo will then meet Rachel Corsie and Scotland on Friday, March 3.
Cup of Nations
DF Katie Bowen and the New Zealand Football Ferns will start the Cup of Nations tournament on Thursday, February 28 against Australia. The tournament features four teams–New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, and Korea Republic. New Zealand will play its second match against Argentina on Sunday, March 3.
