Monarchs Break Three-Match Losing Streak with Draw at Zions Bank Stadium; MF Jose Hernandez Scores to Become 16th Player to Score for Monarchs in 2018; Monarchs Back in Action September 19th at Orange County SC

HERRIMAN, Utah (Wednesday, September 12, 2018) – Real Monarchs SLC (17-9-3, 54 points, 1 West) settled for a 1-1 draw with Saint Louis FC on Wednesday night at Zions Bank Stadium as MF Jose Hernandez’s second half goal ended the Monarchs three-match losing skid.


The match started in favor of Saint Louis, who drew a penalty kick just six minutes into the match. After a delay, STLFC Wal Fall stepped up to the spot and took the shot but it was saved by GK Jake Leeker. On the second time of asking, Fall put away the rebound easily for the early lead. A physical first half ensued as fouls and scuffles took place, but it was the visitors who took the lead into the locker room.


Over the course of the second half, the Monarchs controlled possession of the ball after finding the equalizer in the 49th minute when Hernandez field a pass from MF Maikel Chang and finished off a first-time shot that comfortably found the back of the net. The Monarchs nearly found the go-ahead goal on several occasions late in the second half, but shots on goal were either blocked away or narrowly missed the frame, leaving the Utah side to settle for a point at home.


UP NEXT: The Monarchs will now travel to Orange County SC on Wednesday, September 19 prior to a bout with LA Galaxy II on September 22. The match against OCSC is set to kick off at 8:30 p.m. MT and the match against Galaxy II is set for 8:00 p.m. MT.


GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN:

STL: Wal Fall (Penalty), 9th minute: After Monarchs defender Konrad Plewa brought down the Saint Louis striker inside the area, STLFC were gifted an early penalty. Fall stepped up and delivered a shot to goalkeeper Jake Leeker’s right that Leeker saved. Fall tucked home the second effort for the early lead.


SLC: Jose Hernandez (Maikel Chang), 49th minute: With space inside the area, Chang played a driven ball across the box into the path of an onrushing Hernandez. Hernandez latched onto the cross and finished a first-time shot into the net.


NOTES:

- The Monarchs ended a three-match losing run to move back into the Western Conference’s top spot.


- Jose Hernandez scored his first of the year in the draw to become the 16th player to score for the Monarchs in 2018.


- Maikel Chang registered yet another assist, playing provider to Hernandez for his team-high 8th assist.
