Rachel Corsie Wins Save of the Week!

A Deeper Look at Rachel Corsie’s Save of the Week Nomination
After diving in front of a shot from Orlando FW Sydney Leroux, Utah DF Rachel Corsie has been nominated for the NWSL’s “Save of the Week.” This is the second time this season that Corsie has jumped head-first into an oncoming shot, daringly deflecting the ball just inches away from goal. Let’s break it down.

Rachel Corsie Wins Save of the Week! -

1.Right Place. Right Time.
After recognizing that teammate and GK Abby Smith had come up to clear the ball, Corsie continues her run into the box – guarding the goal. Corsie’s tactical IQ and awareness allowed her to continue running towards goal, even after the ball appeared to be cleared. This positioning put Corsie in the right location for the oncoming Leroux shot.
2.Taking One for the Team.
The ball is cleared to the feet of a waiting Sydney Leroux, who immediately fires on the open goal. Without a second to hesitate, Corsie dives towards the quick shot – going to ground – and skimming the ball off of the top of her head, and over the end line.
3.Winning Mentality
Following the brilliant play, Corsie continues to remain focused on the task at hand. If you watch her body language in the proceeding corner kick, you will notice that she is immediately focused the upcoming play – demonstrating a professionalism and experience known all too well for the Scottish veteran.
