Real Salt Lake Signs Real Monarchs Goalkeeper Andrew Putna

SANDY, Utah (Friday, July 13, 2018) – Real Salt Lake General Manager Craig Waibel announced on Friday that the club has signed GK Andrew Putna to an MLS contract after the goalkeeper spent the last two seasons with Real Monarchs SLC in the USL.

“This is a great credit to Andrew and the work he has put in over the last two years,” Waibel said.  “It’s another feather in the cap for our staff with the Monarchs, who continue to develop players for the first team.”

Putna becomes the seventh player to move up from Real Monarchs to Real Salt Lake, joining three others on the current roster – GK Connor Sparrow, DF Taylor Peay and DF/MF Nick Besler.

Putna, 23, has made six appearances in the last two seasons with the Monarchs, including two starts this season.  He has two shutouts and a 0.83 GAA with the USL club.  Originally drafted in the third round, 48th overall, of the 2018 MLS SuperDraft, he made 74 appearances in four seasons with the University of Illinois-Chicago, going 41-24-8 with 30 shutouts and a 1.05 goals against average.  A two-time Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year, Putna captained the Flames in his junior and senior seasons.

To make room on the roster, RSL placed DF David Horst on the Season-Ending Injury List.  Horst, in his second year during his second stint with Real Salt Lake, had surgery last month to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon.
