Monarchs 5-0-1 at Zions Bank Stadium, Build Five-Point Lead atop League Standings

HERRIMAN, Utah (Tuesday, May 29, 2018) – Real Monarchs SLC (9-2-1, 28 points 1 West) toppled Western Conference rival Sacramento Republic FC 1-0 Tuesday evening as FW Chandler Hoffman wrote himself into the United Soccer League record books. Hoffman’s 50th career regular-season goal – and subsequent winner against Republic FC – solidifies him as just the third player in the league’s modern era to reach the milestone.

The match started furiously with the Monarchs immediately applying pressure to the Sacramento goal as MF Maikel Chang played the aggressor. The match flipped on its head when Republic were awarded a penalty kick – the third against the Monarchs in its last two matches – in the 50th minute. GK Jake Leeker read Adam Moffat’s shot well to parry the ball away to safety. The penalty kick save was Leeker’s second in as many games.

From then, the Monarchs were on the front foot, finding the goal through Hoffman after being slipped in by Chang before calmly slotting home for the historical goal in the 68th minute. The Monarchs defense would then hold firm led by DF Michael Gallagher to earn another shutout victory and remain undefeated at Zions Bank Stadium.

UP NEXT: The Monarchs will remain at home to face Rio Grande Valley Toros on Monday, June 4 at Zions Bank Stadium. Kick off for “Monarchs Family Monday” is set for 7:00 p.m. MT in Herriman.

SCORING SUMMARY:

SLC: Chandler Hoffman (Maikel Chang) 68th minute: A clever through ball played into the path of Hoffman slipped him in 1v1 with Sacramento goalkeeper Josh Cohen. Hoffman needed just the first time shot to slot home his third of the year and his 50th regular season goal.

NOTES:
- FW Chandler Hoffman registered his 50th career regular-season goal – his third of 2018 – to become just the third player in the league’s modern era to reach the milestone. Only Dane Kelley (D.C. United/Richmond Kickers) and Jorge Herrera (Charlotte Independence) reached the milestone prior to Hoffman’s goal against Sacramento.

- GK Jake Leeker saved his second penalty kick in as many games to earn his third shutout in four starts in 2018.

- Assistant Coach Jamison Olave guided the team to victory in Mark Briggs’ absence.
