Sandy, UT (Friday, April 25, 2018) – Utah Royals FC (0-1-3, 3 pts., NWSL 7th place) host the NWSL’s defending champions, the Portland Thorns FC, tomorrow, Saturday, April 28, at Rio Tinto Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. MT, and will be broadcast locally via KMYU, the KSL app, and on radio station ESPN 700 AM, with Greg Wrubell and Carla Haslam providing the call.
The Thorns visit the RioT for the first time ever with an early-season record of 2-1-1 (7 points), currently occupying third place in the NWSL table. Utah Royals FC Head Coach Laura Harvey – the winningest boss in the league’s six-year history – seeks to capture the first win of Utah’s inaugural season against this NWSL rival.
“I respect Portland, I respect what they do and who they are,” says Harvey, who posted a 6-7-3 overall mark against the Thorns during her time in Seattle, including four of the seven losses in the league’s 2013 inaugural season. “But that rivalry doesn’t leave you. I think playing against West Coast teams, and having success against them, is going to be vital for our team.”

Utah Royals FC Host Defending NWSL Champs Portland Thorns Saturday Night at Rio Tinto Stadium -

Utah Royals FC return home to kick off a four-game Rio Tinto Stadium homestand one week after a thrilling road comeback against the N.C. Courage last Saturday, where second-half goals from FWs Katie Stengel and Brittany Ratcliffe brought the team back from an early deficit. Holding North Carolina to the fewest shots they’ve had all season, the match ultimately ended in a 2-2 stalemate.

This Saturday’s match will be the second home game in the club’s history. In the inaugural match at Rio Tinto Stadium – welcoming over 19,000 screaming fans – FW Elise Thorsnes and MF Gunny Jonsdottir both found opportunities in front of the frame, but were unable to capitalize. USWNT forward Amy Rodriguez also made her return to the pitch, subbing in late in the game after 363 days of ACL surgery rehab and recovery. A solid possession game gave URFC chances in the attack, but a world-class volley in the first-half from Chicago left the home team trailing 1-0 for a majority of the match.
