QUOTE SHEET

REAL SALT LAKE 2-1 NEW YORK RED BULLS
RIO TINTO STADIUM; JUNE 22, 2016

Real Salt Lake
Head Coach Jeff Cassar

On the resiliency of the team:
“You have to look at the response. Obviously it's extremely positive and the manner that we were just imposing our will on that team they were just changing the formation, changing their strategies, trying to bring players on, and I thought that, I really liked what we were doing in the second half and now we have to figure out how we can play with that same urgency and intensity for 90 minutes. I'm going to have to look at everything to why we're starting that way, but it's got to get better, quick.”

On Red Bulls second half decline:
“You know they had a strategy about bringing in a lot of second team players to bring the energy, which they did. You know it's a credit to them. We knew that. We know what they were going to do, they've done it every single game. I told the guys at half time ‘You've got to look in the mirror and step up your game.’ We're missing passes that we just shouldn't have and that needs to get better. Maybe it's what we're doing in warm ups to get them prepared, there'll be a lot of discussions, but again, undefeated at home right now, there's a lot of good things happening. It's a tough stretch, the guys have been putting in unbelievable minutes and still had energy toward the end of the game. The first half was just unacceptable.”

On his frustration after the win:
“I wasn't all that happy about the Wilmington one, to be fair. I'm just disappointed. I think the players are wondering why we're starting that way, I sure am, and we have to figure it out.  I don't think it's just one thing. What I see is some poor turnovers that lead to energy leaving the building, leaving the players, and once we start to create the energy. We need to get the fans more involved earlier into the game, that's what helps us out. That's what home field advantage is, really bringing the crowd into it, and there's not surprise why we were doing great at the end of the game, the crowd was unbelievable. We were feeding off that energy, and it sure does help us, but we've also got to give them something to cheer about in the first half.”

On Sunny’s injury affecting the team:
“I know we were going to be using subs during this game, there's been a lot of guys who have played a lot of minutes so you have to use them. I thought each sub brought something to the game and that's important. I think in years past there's been not a spark. I think John [Stertzer] was very good tonight. I thought Jordan Allen was very exciting and brought exactly what we needed to the game. I thought Olmes, in a short period of time, was busy. We're going to be counting on those guys on Saturday as well.”

On Sunny’s injury:
“All the reports we're getting right now are that it's a fracture to his orbital bone. I don't know how bad but he's going to be in the hospital all night and we're going to reevaluate tomorrow but it's looking like it was a fracture to his orbital bone.”

On getting Beckerman back for the Dallas game:
“I probably could but I'll have a conversation with Kyle, but listen, we'll get through the Saturday game and see how it is but I think this is an important game as well for the US and we want to support and if he sends anyone back then for sure but if he sends no one I can live with that.”

Midfielder Jordan Allen

Overall thoughts on the game:
We were struggling a little bit to connect and maybe lacked a little bit of movement. So coming into the game I needed to do those two things, provide movement for people like Javi [Morales], find space, and connect the passes when I had it.”

On his goal:
“Tony [Beltran] played a great balled across, I’m not sure if Olmes [Garcia] saw me or not but I had to treat him like a defender a little bit and push him off. I didn’t connect on it like I wanted to but luckily it took a deflection and it went in.”

Midfielder John Stertzer

On his first assist:
I mean it feels great honestly, Yura made a great run and he still had a lot of work to do with that header and it was a great finish.”

On the comeback win:
“We gotta stop doing this sort of stuff. I mean it just shows how together we are as a team and we believe that if we still go down that we can come back and fight and win and when you have a great crowd like that behind you it gives you a little extra boost and it just feels good, we’ve got to stop going down.”

On the forced early sub:
I mean everyone on the bench we always prepare that we can be called on at anytime that's part of being in the bench, you have to come in and bring a speak when your numbers call and tonight I had to go in pretty early, you never want to see someone go down like that and get hurt but it's like you put eighteen guys on the bench so when you need guys to step they can and unfortunately everyone that came off tonight off the bench made a contribution to help us get this result.”

Looking ahead:
“Yeah it was a big stretch for us this week, taking care of our bodies and looking forward we have a big game on the road since Dallas is a tough place to play but we are going to go in and give it our best, we are in a good place because everyone is confident and we like where we are at.”

New York Red Bulls
Head Coach Jesse Marsch

On coming out on the tough end of the result:
“I’m really happy with how the guys played and they threw a lot at it.  It was a short turnaround and we put a lot of newer guys on the field and I thought a lot of them had good games. So in the end, we give up the goal and it’s a dicey game and we’re trying to hang on. Then that deflection goal is a little bit unlucky. So all in all, I’m really happy with the overall effort and really disappointed for them that we didn’t get the result because I think for them they put a lot in to it and it would have been nice to reward them.”

On Yura Movsisyan picking up steam in the second half:
“We had some tired legs on the field and that meant that in some of these defensive moments we had to just hang on.  But that being said I thought we contained them for the most part and didn’t give away a lot of clear chances. The cross that comes in we don’t get on it quick enough and we don’t deal with it in the box then the next there is a deflection goal. I though Yura got going a little bit but we know that those guys are dangerous in open space and tried to limit that as much as we could. But I thought for the most part that we did a good job on all four of their attacking players.”

On introducing Sacha Kljestan and Bradley Wright-Phillips late in the game:
“Part of the reason of having them on the field is that Brad understands from a striker perspective what our tactics are so he is clear on how to help and he can help us find a goal. Then Sacha can still do a lot of the defensive work. Maybe the one that was really tired was Sal Zizzo. Then they started going at him and attacking him. Then we put Chris Duvall in to try to help with that.  In the end, it just got away from us.”

On not conceding in 400 plus minutes:
“When we looked at the schedule at the beginning of the year, honestly I thought this was going to be one of the toughest games that we had. With the quick travel and everything that we had to face, we wanted to put a team on the field that had some fresh legs and also a team that could go after it a get the result. In a lot of ways we did good with that and a lot of guys stepped up and did well. This also allows us with the rotation to put a team on the field on Saturday that can go after the game. Heat, elevation, short turnaround, travel…it’s not easy man, it’s not easy. In the end I’m really happy with the effort that the group put in.”

On the Aurelien Collin red card:
“The one question I had is that I’m a little confused with the red card at the end. So I’m not sure what the decision was on that one so I’ll have to take a look. I’m getting word that Aurelien got all ball after Plata was down. I’m just a little confused.”

Defender Gideon Baah

Overall thoughts on the game:
“I think it was a difficult game. These guys have not been beaten at home for a long time and we just came here to smash that record. But unfortunately we lost it in the last minute. But all the guys dug deep and it was a good effort from us but an unfortunate result.”

On the late red card shown to Collin:
“I’ll have to watch the replay on that because it happened pretty fast. I don’t know and I can’t judge if it was a red card or not. I just have to watch the replay. It’s a big blow for us since he’ll be gone on Saturday and we need him.”

On the opening goal scored:
“It was a set piece goal and we’ve been practicing set similar set pieces for a long time. We just have to fight for through the set piece and good us that we got one. We were trying to hold on for the rest of the game and maybe trying to get one back. But it is a tough result for us. We have to put our heads up and look towards our next game.”

On looking forward to Saturday’s game against Columbus:
“Stay positive. Keep a positive mentality. It wasn’t a bad effort at all. The elevation, the heat with everything it was a brave effort from all of us but unfortunately we lost. We just have to stay positive and keep our heads up and look up to the next game. Hopefully we will put up a great performance like this one and get a result.”
