Monarchs Fall 2-1 to Sacramento in Reno

SANDY, Utah (Saturday, June 11, 2016)- Real Monarchs SLC (4-6-4, 16 pts) fell to Sacramento Republic FC (6-3-3 21pts) at Greater Nevada Field in Reno, Nevada Saturday night to an audience of 5,182 people. This was the second of the back-to-back games the Monarchs played against Sacramento this week, dropping both games to Sacramento, the first game being played on Wednesday.  Saturday was the third “Monarchs On Tour” home game while the field at Rio Tinto Stadium was resurfaced.

In the 40th minute, the Monarchs took the lead when MF Ricardo Velazco scored his sixth goal of this season.  The play began with DF Tyler Arnone playing a ball into FW Kevaughn Frater, who turned facing a defender and took a shot.  Frater’s shot was deflected and Velazco got the rebound just outside the box.   He then hit the ball into the far left corner of the goal finishing with his right foot for the 1-0 lead.

Sacramento responded in the second half, though.  The Republic scored an equalizer when Emrah Klimenta had a give-and-go to get open on the end line.  Klimenta centered the ball directly to Cameron Iwasa who was able to finish the goal in the 47th minute.  In the 55th minute it was Iwasa who found himself with the ball at the end line and was able to cross into Adam Jahn, who got his head on the cross but Monarchs GK Lalo Fernandez - last week’s USL Goalkeeper of the Week - was able to deflect the header.  However, Jahn was able to seal the goal off the rebound securing the 2-1 lead for Sacramento.  The Monarchs would press for the equalizer, but finished with the 2-1 defeat.

The Real Monarchs are looking to bounce back after this week to finish up their 11 game road stretch strong before returning to Rio Tinto Stadium July 2, hosting Vancouver Whitecaps 2 at 7:00 p.m. MT after the Sandy venue’s field resurface is finished.
